i work in a chinese church, so all of my students are asian and/or asian-american. k-pop is big in general rn, but it's especially popular among asian youth. as such, i've been having a bunch of my students recommend some kpop to me to me. some of it i'm not into, especially some of the cringier english lyrics mixed in with the korean lyrics. however, there are some real bangers, especially from groups that are slightly less popular than the ridiculously famous groups like bts and blackpink. do you guys listen to k-pop? do you have any recommendations?

here's just one example of a song i'm vibing with rn:

I never got super into it, aside from some League of Legends songs which are admittedly catchy as fuck. I feel kind of bad about that--I tried to learn Korean for a bit for way cringier reasons, so it kinda feels like a waste not to be a K-pop stan too.

I do like some Day6! I don't actively seek their stuff out, but I like How Can I Say and Sweet Chaos a lot in particular.

Wild Horse by Norazo is fun as a meme.

I listen some korean songs, mostly Blackpink. Even k-dramas are even being famous as well, especially for teens whose watch them and listen to their music

I'm just gonna link this and this.

Jokes aside, not a big fan of K-pop cuz I'm not a big fan of pop in general. There's some exceptions, but if I'm painting with broad strokes, it's a genre that's repetitive, simplistic, and relies too heavily on screeching synths. It feels very "dumbed down" compared to the music of yesteryear, though I do acknowledge survivorship bias is at play there with the older songs I'm comparing it to.

Basically my opinion lol. I'm a classical musician, mostly, so I'm not too big on a lot of modern pop - K-pop included.

I definitely don't hate it, though, and if it's playing, I won't complain. My best friends at uni currently are all Koreans, so it's generally the background music at our gatherings, and I don't particularly have the choice to complain!
