Both are really great maps, but I think Matthew's variety of gorgeous areas is something I simply can't ignore.

Matthew: I'm a big fan of this map. I love the color palettes and the usage of so many different types of trees to give each area its own unique character. So many of the screens are beautiful on their own, and I really like the detailing that bring areas like the desert to life. I do have to say that the ice forest feels overplayed. I've seen it in lost of quests, and nothing about this one feels like it sets it apart. I have a similar feeling about the area in the lower left. Actually, now that I'm looking at it, the right side looks amazing to me, and the left looks considerably more average. Still, sometimes maps need more basic areas, and it's tough to keep everything feeling fresh and amazing. I do really like the few screens in the upper left, though.
HeroOfFire: I think you're in a tough spot as far as putting a single area map against such an expansive overworld. That's one of the bigger problems I have with Map of the Month as a whole, actually, but I still like looking at it as a showcase more than anything. I really like how much water this place has, and the interconnected nature of that central river. I could see this place being really interesting to explore in coming in from multiple entrances, then maybe returning later with the flippers. I do feel the palette is a bit plain and monochrome. I tend to prefer places that have a bit more color variety and highlights.
Matthew's get's my vote.

I feel bad for HeroOfFire because it's a good map but I had to vote for Matthew, that color palette works very well.
