In your opinion, which costume was the biggest pain in the ass to wear, or move around in? Alternatively, which do you think would be the worst to wear? Some things to consider: a lot of the makeup was toxic, and the stage they filmed on would be upwards of 90-100 degrees from the extremely bright lights needed to film with the Technicolor cameras. Most costumes also took several hours to put on, and the actors could not always eat without needing to get back into makeup. They also worked very, very long days since no one knew what rights were back then.

Scarecrow was covered in highly flammable straw, and the film had a lot of fire in it, if you think about it. He even gets set on fire right before Dorothy kills the Wicked Witch of the West. Other than Dorothy, his costume was probably the least of a pain.

Tin Man had to wear a toxic aluminum based face paint, and got an eye infection. The original actor was fired after two weeks, and filming had to restart since he got very sick from the makeup, and ended up having breathing problems for the rest of his life.

The Cowardly Lion's costume weighed 90lbs., and was made from real lion pelts (it was the 1930s babyyyy!). It had to be cleaned every day, and probably smelled terrible.

The Wicked Witch of the West's makeup was also made from toxic metals, in this case, some form of copper. She was also horribly burned from a stage effect gone wrong, but this is more to do with the effect than the costume. She also could only drink things through a straw while in makeup. (same for the lion too, actually)

And then we have Dorothy, probably the "simplest" costume. It's just a dress, some ribbons, and those red shoes. But, in the one scene where she opens the door to Oz, and it switches to color, she had to be dressed in a sepia toned costume, and also have sepia colored makeup on a sepia toned set. We're going to assume this makeup was probably toxic.

All the actors were also exposed to asbestos when Galinda the Good Witch sends in snow to wake them from the poppy fields.

My vote goes to the lion, with the tin man being a close second.

Thoughts?

I think the toxicity issues far outweigh the lion's burden. I myself may have lost some good pounds wearing that costume.

Tin Man definitely got the worst of it.

For real though the actor who played Tin Man sounded like he had it the worst. Gees.

Is worse than you think, it basically wrecked Tin Man's lungs. He had to be placed in an Iron Lungs capsule for a long while to sort-of recover and that is why he was fired (was unavailable to work, because they fucked him up).

Yes, absolutely. I don't think I know a single person in the US who hasn't seen the movie or, at the very least, doesn't know what it's about and generally what happens.

Tin Man definitely had it worst, given that, as previously, the first actor who played him ended up in the hospital from the costume.

I would've said Lion or Witch (I remember reading about the burns) without knowing Tin Man's full story but it's Tin Man by a mile. Jesus.

The way this industry could almost kill a man and then fire him for being almost killed by their negligence... Big USA moment.

It's an American classic for sure, but I think it's one of those movies that had a significant cultural impact on English-speaking countries too. It mightn't have the same connotations in Australia or the UK like it might have in America, but it's still recognised as an important part of cinema's history

It is an iconic movie, and one you're supposed to have seen if you're a real movie buff (whether you're US based or not, though I suppose it could be even more famous in the US). It is notable for being the first popular movie to be shot in colour (after a black and white opening sequence). While technically it wasn't the first movie to be shot in colour, the previous ones were pretty obscure, so when Oz came out, it was likely the first time most movie-goers saw a colour film. There's a moment when Dorothy enters the world of Oz and the black and white images suddenly turn to colour, which must have been a huge "WOW!" moment for the viewers back then; we can only imagine what it was like, but the experience is lost on us.

There's also an enduring urban legend that Pink Floyd's album "Dark Side of the Moon" was meant to be played along with the movie, and that the song cues would correspond to what happens on screen. There are some noteworthy coincidences, but they are really just that. Yet somehow, this urban legend probably contributed to reinforce the iconic status of both the movie and the album. (There is also a lesser known, but similar urban legend claiming Pink Floyd music can be synced with "2001: A Space Odyssey").

That being said, I acknowledge the movie's iconic status, but personally speaking, I think it has aged terribly and isn't worth your time. And this comes from a guy who can enjoy very old or challenging movies; just not this one.

What's crazy is, it apparently didn't do super well when it first came out, and actually lost MGM money. A lot of people just didn't "get" it I guess, or didn't want to spend their hard earned post-great depression money on what was seen as a kid's movie. Over time though, it got more popular, and I think a big part of that was it being shown on TV a lot. Most people I know saw it as a TV movie at some point in their lives.

I don't know for sure, but from my memory the Wizard of Oz is not one of the movies that were shown often enough in german TV.

There also are tons of similar fairytale movies mostly not from english speaking countries (as far as I know), which might be a reason why.
