Check the volume on the PC (sometimes the simple Wave Out volume is adjusted by other applications), and make sure the speakers are plugged in to the right jack.

If both of those are in good standing then try rebooting. At random I have found that Windows decides not to detect certain hardware - occasionally I'll boot it up and the mouse doesn't work, or the sound card doesn't work, or the video card doesn't work (and it goes to 640x480 in 16 colors.)

Did sound work before, or did you just install the drivers?

No, it's always worked. The odd thing is that the sound works in the headphones, but not the speakers. The speakers are pretty old, but I don't know why it's happening..

Another possibility is that the speakers might have a broken wire inside the cord. Jiggle the cord while you have some music playing and see if it works then.

If the headphones work but the speakers don't, the speakers are the problem. The system can't even tell which you've got plugged in, so it can't be doing anything different.

Hmm.. it probably is the speakers. I'll have to save up and buy some new ones for my parents, since I frequently use the computer a lot..
