I've seen some videos that claim it's possible to hook up a Wii U pro controller to a PC, but they all require you to download some sketchy looking file, and judging by the comments, it seems to not work a lot. does anybody here know of a way to actually do this? (without having to buy anything, preferably)

Option B would be to buy 3rd. Party software to do it.

I've seen Pro Controllers being hooked up to Macs via bluetooth without a whole lot of trouble, more specifically being connected for use with OpenEmu.

I use my Wii U Pro controllers as my normal everyday PC controller. I bought an item that allows me to connect it very simply.
Mayflash Wireless Wii U Pro Controller to PC USB Adapter
It sets up very easily, and works great.
(My apologies, I didn't see you said where you didn't want to buy anything.)

I use the same thing, and it works really well. (I also missed the not buying anything as well...)

As long as your computer has bluetooth, it should be fine. That's how I did it. I can't remember how, though. I might end up try to connect it again for the heck of it. If I can, I'll let you know how!
Also, if it's easier for you you can also connect GameCube controllers with a very cheap peripheral from Amazon. That's what I generally use as my PC controller for emulators!

My friend uses the usb thing that came with Sm4sh to connect his cube controller. I don't have a pro controller yet, but knowing it can be connected to a PC might make me get one. They're just so expensive still, and a cheaper 360 controller works just fine too

The official Nintendo USB adapter for Gamecube controllers and the Gamecube controllers themselves are pretty cheap here in Australia (Surprisingly). So I have a second Gamecube controller in storage and one of the USB adapters.

This is along the lines of what I was looking for. If you can figure out how you did it and let me know that would be excellent.

I'm sure one day I'll be in this situation too, ten years from now when I get my first Wii U out of someone's holographic garbage can / toaster combination or whatever the technology will be in the future.
Do these controller adapters work without having to configure any controls? Because it seems that no matter what I do, I'm always having to match up some configuration utility to the buttons on the controller, and then the configuration utility to the configuration utility to the emulator's (Or other program's) configuration screen. It's a delightful madhouse. ( This one is the one I use.)
