Use the "Refiller" itemclass. Set a magic use cost, and set it to refill life.

The quest can be upgraded to 2.55 by loading and resaving it just fine. Though I'd suggest keeping frequent backups just in case. Computers work in mysterious ways.

Also while I'd still recommend upgrading for other reasons, this kind of item can also be made super easily with a script.

2.53 is quite outdated, so yes I recommend upgrading. You should just be able to load the quest file as normal.

The 3.0 nightlies at least will do this FOR YOU! (On saving a quest, if it was previously saved in a different version, it will create a backup for you!) ...however this feature does not appear to be in the current 2.55 builds, so I do still recommend manually backing up in the meantime.

not sure if i should continue asking in this thread, or start a new one, but i loaded the game in 2.55 and it seemed to work, except that all the items available are the ones from 2.53, if i default the items i have edited in 2.53 back to the original state and then reload, will that give me access to the new 2.55 items? or will i have to build the new items using the item editor? thank you again

The items you have are from 2.53 because they are your quest file's items. The "New Items" available in 2.55 when you `File->New` are part of the updated default quest file, so to have those, you either need to make them yourself with the item editor, or start over from File->New.
