Making Link disappear from the screen?

I've always wondered how to make disappear Link from the screen...

Now, this is quite a tricky one really.
Back in the day, the only way to do it was to make a non-gameplay item with a link-tile modifier so as to move Link's tiles along onto blank tiles - therefore making him invisible.
Pretty rubbish way to do it, but we didn't get given a better method =P
If you set Link's Action to LA_DROWNING he'll also become invisible for a few frames nowadays, but if you do it for too long (can't remember how long exactly) he'll reappear for a frame and flash and take damage, which looks pretty crappy.
