The lens is actually optional. You can (and will have to) navigate blind. Sorry about that poor design choice.
Fortunately, you can't fall down this one pit.

Oh, I thought you were stuck in the Cave of Darkness. Once you've beaten Ganon, you're ready to head into the Dark World.
You need a bombchu for that one switch.
