I reformatted my laptop and decided to try the native Linux ZC build this time. I can confirm that On Mint 21.1 (based on Ubuntu 22.x if anyone doesn't know), the 2.55 a114 build works great. The Linux build is more stable (before I was getting weird and quirky bugs in certain script-heavy quests) than trying to play the windows version on Wine, and slightly less CPU and memory intensive as well. The Linux build is much easier to get running, as in my case, I wasn't really using Wine for anything else except to play ZC. Besides jumping through a few hoops to get midis to work, all I had to do was unpack the tarball to a directory and the ZC player executable just works and can be configured via the ZC launcher.
My only real complaint is that, unlike the windows build, the CPU usage doesn't stop when I hit ESC and go into the menu. Thus, when ADD strikes and I walk away from the laptop for an extended period, I have to close ZC - lest my poor dinosaur laptop overheat in my hovel that has been rendered oven like amid the remarkably resilient "heat dome" plaguing the American southwest.
