I figured out how to make it execute as a program, but only ZClauncher opens, what extra stuff do I need to do to make it run?

You need to install allegro. If I am right on ubuntu it's allegro4.2 not sure.

Basically,you need the programs (zelda-l, zquest-l) and the support files (.dat, .qst and so on). You can get them from the windows version as they're the same everywhere.
Ubuntu is a type of linux and Xubuntu is Ubuntu with the Xfce dektop environment, which uses less resources than the standard Gnome one. I use Xubuntu myself to make the linux builds.

See I use arch linux to do my zc builds myself.
