Just for fun, I made mp3's from a GBS file, which was ripped from Link's Awakening. The "Link's Awakening Soundtrack" as I call it, is available for download. All the songs sound exactly as they would on a Gameboy Color.

Tools used in this process:

Ubuntu Linux 7.04: The OS that provided the basis for this operation.
gbsplay 0.0.8: Used to play the GBS subsongs into raw audio files.
sox: Used to convert the raw audio files into wav files
LaME: Used to encode the wav files as mp3's.
AudioTagTool: Used to add ID3 tags to the mp3's.
gbs2mp3.sh: A little script I wrote to automate the process.
MediaFire.com: Where I uploaded the files.

Note: Some of the mp3's are very short, and just contain a few seconds worth of music. Don't ask me why, this is how they came from the cartridge.

Tracks 01-50 (54.93 MB) : http://www.mediafire.com/?bdjnkddm1mj
Tracks 51-96 (47.18 MB) : http://www.mediafire.com/?8d5ujs0nbrm

Enjoy.

It would be more useful if they were in MIDI form. Then we could use them in quests, at least.

But good job anyway.

If I'm right you can find almost all of the Link's Awakening songs at Galbadia Hotel. Including that alien like guys theme before Evil Eagle comes to help him. Once I find the Link (no pun intended) I'll add it to my next post or this one maybe.

I can't post them in MIDI form; GBS music isn't convertible to MIDI.

That's odd. I was under the impression that the Gameboy used MIDI music... they must convert it to another extension to play it.

Their format is similar to midi, but it uses special 'instruments' that are embedded in the Game Boy's hardware. gbsplay emulates that hardware so that the right instrument sounds can be used. If converted to midi, the songs would sound completely different.

This is true, fuzzypig. They would. This is the same for other 16-bit and below systems, and the N64 (it used a MIDI type format).

Thats not exactly a reason not to convert them to MIDI. Infact it'd probably be better to convert them to midi at those horrid file sizes.
