Shoot the pole next to the rock with an arrow.
If you don't have the bow and arrows, here's a hint for you, go back to town and look around there.

If you can't do that, then at least read this:
The message strings the skull dudes say to you inside 3 of the houses in the village CHANGE after EVERY major dungeon. They subtly point you in the direction of where to go, or what to do next to get to either a) the next dungeon or b) a new item.
Not all strings may be relevant at that point, (like one refers to the boomerang which can't be acquired until the level after) but that still doesn't mean you can ignore it. So they are VERY helpful. Check back with those three often.
