I wish the default behavior from our old board was still around for it, but from what I've noticed, you click on the forum icon to change that you've read it.

Also. at the bottom of the board index.. Yes.. the board index.. where it shows the board stats and things.. there's a little link titled Mark posts as read. 
Click it and then you don't have to do what Nick said for it does it for all forums. :>
