basicly my question is, How do I decode the numbery stuff into whether each part is worth the price? icon_wacky.gif

I know RAM and hard drive space.

Basicly I want it to have a decent ammount of RAM(perferably 1gig) and a decent ammount of harddrive space(preferably 100mbs) I'm gonna stick Linux on it so theres no need to worry about Vista and crap

but I don't know anything about video cards, sound cards, network cards, etc.

I'm pretty sure you meant 100 Gbs of hard drive space. 100 mbs is pretty small.

What are you planning on doing with said new computer?

If you just want an OK computer with Linux on it.. well what you need to do is buy a motherboard, a case, and a power supply. Then you have to get one (or more) hard disk drives, as well as memory (RAM). You would also most likely want to buy an audio card, you need a graphics card, as well as an PCI (PCIe) expansion cards, and you also need a processor compatible with the motherboard (and a heat sink for the processor).

Yea Gbs icon_heh.gif

I don't know exactly what I want to do with it. :shrugs: I don't plan on playing high power games. I do want to do a bit of 3D modelling and graphical art. Programming too.

Are there parts you would recommend?

I've been looking around for the best (and cheap) parts for a computer I could find, and as far as Hard Drives go, this seems to be the best... though I'm still searching myself. Tell me if you find anything icon_biggrin.gif.

well, motherboard wise, this one from abit ( http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813127015 ) looks pretty decent! It supports the newest processors, and has PCIe16,PCIe, and 3 PCI slots as well as up to 4 GB of DDR2667MHz RAM. It's got Intel north and south bridges as well as the onboard AC97 codec (Easily supported).

Processor wise, http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819115014 looks good. It's LGA 775, Core 2 Duo (E4400) so it's 2.0GHz 64 bits. It's the same one in the new iMacs, so it's pretty speedy.

You've got the HDD, as for memory: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820227118 that looks to be good. 2 GB, (2x1GB) it's a good deal, and is the fastest for your motherboard (DDR2 667MHz)..

Graphics card wise: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814125070

It seems a bit high end, but it's got support for SLI, a big resolution, and OpenGL 2.0. It's 256MB video memory, and the 8600 is a good card. I'd recommend it. (Plus AIGXL+Compiz is a little demanding on *nix)

-- lemme get to class, I'll edit this later --

OK, in class. Now.. audio card / wireless / CD/DVD etc.

Well, audio card wise, I'd recommend Creative. For $27 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16829102003

it's a 7.1ch Audigy. It's probably quite decent. As for if you want WiFi, it depends on whether you have a certain router (i.e. Linksys Router / Linksys cards... but the mobo comes with ethernet out, so not to worry. Just tell me in case you need one. As for DVD / CD Combo drives.. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16827152058

That burns DVD up to Dual Layer, and CDs too.. reads CDs and DVDs. So it's the catch-all but no HD (BD/HD-DVD).. so it's pretty nice. Cheap too!

So that's RAM, HDD, Mobo, CPU, Audio, GFx, DVD. Well, what else do you need? If you need a WiFi card, just say it.

Oh, and if you've got two hard drives, don't forget to set the main one's jumper to "master" and the secondary to "slave". icon_wink.gif

I tried to build a computer, and I failed. Miserably.

Master of Power, you would need WiFi in case you needed to connect to a wireless network, but if you don't use it, you can just as easily use ethernet (it's onboard with the motherboard)
