With my girlfriend's birthday coming up and a new "bill" I'm gonna have to be paying, my budget can't go any higher than $550...****ty...but that's life. icon_frown.gif

I have an old Dell Latitude, and other than the fact that it's ancient for a laptop (5 years old), it's still pretty decent. If you're budget is that limited, I suggest doing one of two things. Actually, you could do both. icon_razz.gif

1. Wait until you get at least $50 more dollars. The $599 Inspiron has Athlon 64 Dual-Core Processor. So, it could very well be almost twice as powerful as the $499 Inspiron in regards to processor power.

2. Buy stuff on the Dell Outlet store. You can get a laptop with a simple scratch or a dent for hundreds of dollars cheaper that you can normally. You can search for the particular laptop that you want, modifying the processor, memory, etc. I suggest searching for "Scratch & Dent" and "Previously Ordered New" first. icon_wink.gif

It's just me, but I wouldn't get an Athlon Processor.. I'd go with the Core 2 Duo line, if you can, they are better in re gards to performance, power per wat, etc. annd.... you're gonna get Vista, so I hope you like it.

You don't really need a Core 2 Duo in a laptop to get good performance for like...word processing and stuff. C2Ds are like ... 64-bit uberfast top-of-the-line processors.

I mean, my sister does her schoolwork on an old AMD Sempron machine. For like...Internet browsing and running Office it's plenty fast. And, a Sempron is one of your options there, too - I believe the 3500+ is 1.8Ghz or so.

... and it comes with 2GB RAM?!?! That's a bit ... overkill for a basic work machine. I mean, ... yeah, it's running Vista so you need at least 1GB, but 2GB is really quite a bit more than you'll ever need.

EDIT: If you also poke around a bit you can get the same machine, only with Windows XP installed. For $100 cheaper.

Noir always has a way of confusing the hell out of me. icon_smile.gif
So, if I got it with 1gb ram and XP that would probably good enough and be a nice savings wouldn't it? Hmmm...*plots*
