Not everyone is a quick learner.
Age don't really matter also...

He didn't even imply anyone was. Nor did he imply age mattered either. He was simply stating his point of view and his experience.

Now now, let's not turn this nice little thread into a war zone.

I'd say start with the tileset you can actually handle, not which looks the prettiest.  If you're going to work in DoR, but are unable to produce the custom graphical assets that blend into the tileset well (which I'd argue, DoR is already too much of a crazy hodgepodge of way too many different graphical styles and qualities), that you will eventually require, you're going to have a rough time making any sort of progress.  You could request graphics here, but there's no guarantee you'll get what you need in a timely manner, or even at all.  The Zelda 1 Tileset (Default), the Gameboy Zelda Tileset, and probably the Beta Satellaview Tileset are the easiest to produce assets for.

I know this DoR tileset discussion isn't directly aimed at me, but it spawned because I brought it up. I just want to make it clear that I pointed at the DoR tileset as an attempt to answer the original question. I wasn't really thinking about how many quest making EXP points someone needed to use it properly.

Don't feel bad, I used DoR when I was still a learning and did pretty well with it, if I didn't lose my file I'd probably be using that tileset right now. Just depends on the person really. Even now days I try to mimic some of the old work I did in DoR because I enjoy the ideas I came up with when using the set at a rather inexperienced level.

In terms of a tileset that resembles OoT, because that is this topic's purpose, I recommend DoR.  In fact, I recommend the original DoR.  Dance of Remembrance was originally going to have several locations from Ocarina of Time in it, and I believe that one of the earliest demos actually had a playable Hyrule Field that resembled the field from Ocarina of Time almost exactly.  I recommend the original DoR not because it is any easier than its second iteration, which it is not, but because its atmosphere and graphical style better echo those of OoT.

DoR also has something that most other tilesets do not: a different perspective on the overworld.  The player sees all sides of the cliff-face: not only the front, which the player sees in most other sets.  I cannot quite express why, but it makes the world feel more three-dimensional.  This perspective gives cause to some difficulties while designing, but, if you have good intuition about how things should look, or an eye for when things are out of place, then I would foresee no problems.  I certainly never had any, but this is something that varies between people.

So where people are getting the quote "go for the prettiest" I honestly don't know but the OP is simply asking the [closest thing to an OoT tileset] and people are saying DoR. What, suggesting DoR means your a graphical enforcer or something? And so what if there's style clash? You're making this for fun, not to get a perfect score from IGN. The less you can make DoR not style clash, the better though. Also would like to quickly point out the OP isn't asking the best tileset [to start with].

So I'm (and others are) promoting DoR upon asking which tileset [resembles OoT's graphics the most].

What do you think: should I use DoR or Pure?

Whichever one you like better. Personally I think Pure is much nicer looking.

While we're on the topic of tilesets, does anyone have custom Pure-styled Majora tiles? I'll be using them in the game I've just started called "Revenge of Majora."

Edit: I've changed the name to "Majora's Revenge."
