There's a system for it in Depths of Malice, which you're free to pull out of the script file. You can grab it from the download here. It's worth nothing that it's a fair amount of setup, and importantly, it won't work for any items that you hold down, like the lens of truth. That's a 2.53 limitation that can't be worked around easily. If that's a deal breaker, probably best to update to 2.55. There's not much reason not to, at this point.
