I'm thinking of starting a SoTW-esque contest...

What is the TC? It's a contest to see who can make the best shot using a certain tileset while using only the tiles and palettes that were originally in it. This is the key difference it would have from SoTW. With SoTW, people are impressed mainly by fancy graphics and eye-pleasing palettes. With TC, however, you're not using anything (most people) haven't seen before. Of course, everyone would be making shots using the same tileset. Of course, SoTW would still be up.

The first tileset to be used would be a Pure set (any one). The next sets to be used would be Descendant, New BS, New Classic, and maybe the occassional Orion's LTTP, Game Boy Zelda and other good sets. The reason for choosing Pure, Descendant, New BS and New Classic as the main ones to have contests for is to not to bore people. These are all very unique tilesets that are all excellent and original. If we went through every tileset in the PureZC database, it'd take to long to get back to the good stuff, and we'd have to suffer through not-so-good tilesets such as the Pokemon Yellow tileset. LTTP and GBZ are all also good, and would be in for variety.

Why do this? Well, for one, the contest would probably attract more people to enter because they don't need to worry about being shut out by fancy graphics that they just aren't capable of creating. It's just you, Zelda Classic, a tileset, and your design skills.

Notice the part I bolded? Design skills. That's the other reason. As I said before, fancy graphics make you almost sure to win a SoTW, unless other people enter with fancy graphics too. The voters pay little to no attention to how the screen is set up. Hell, you could be a god when it comes to setting up dungeons to flow great and stuff. But in SoTW, it's all about the graphics. So you'll be left in the dark.

Think of it this way. Let's compare SoTWers to fashion deisgners and TCers to interior designers.

Like fashion designers, the people who enter SoTW make beautiful things. Fashion designers make great-looking and usually expensive clothing, SoTWers make great-looking screenshots. Be it through colors, patterns or pixels, SoTWers are the ones who make the expensive "clothes" for Zelda Classic.

TCers are more like interior designers because they aren't making anything that looks beautiful (by itself, at least). They're just working with the average stuff that almost anyone has access to (perhaps due to budget issues.). Interior designers have to make setup of the room nice looking in order to captivate their customers while still remaining in-budget. This is pretty much the exact thing that will have to be done in the Tileset challenge in order to win. You'll have to set up the screen so people will want to know more about it; simply put, make it interesting! A dungeon with switches and a lot of water, for example, gives the voters a lot more to think about then just a simple forest shot.

In summary, the TC would be similar to SoTW, except you would have to use a chosen tileset that has not been modified. It would be based around the idea of design, rather than the prospect of graphics. This would also promote a greater number of entrees, because they don't need to spend days or even weeks working on graphics that can compete in SoTW, knowing that even if they do win, they'll probably have to improve the other graphics in the quest as well.

What do you think? Does this sound good?

It sounds interesting, but with this in mind, wouldn't this lower the enteries in SotW already? Most people I see in SotW don't really use many custom tiles or edits already, and this would make SotW's well run... dry, so to speak. I do admit, this is an interesting idea, especially since it gives those who can't use fancy graphics a chance, but I hope it wouldn't seperate SotW and TC completely. icon_confused.gif
