There are actually two "current" versions, both available here: http://zeldaclassic.com/downloads
Use either the latest 2.53.1 beta, or the latest 2.55 alpha.
Which one you "should" use, depends on what features you need.
2.55 has a lot of new features in nearly every category, but extended script support is the most prominent of all.
2.53.1 is much more simplistic by comparison. However, this also means it's more accessible and easier to navigate, and if I understand correctly from your other posts, you want to do a quest that's very similar to the original NES game, in which case 2.53.1 will have everything you need if traditional NES is really all you want to do.
And if you start in 2.53.1 and you find out 2.55 has more features that you want, you can always open your 2.53.1 quest in 2.55 and it will be properly converted to that version. However, you can't go down from 2.55 to 2.53.1, so if you start in 2.55 and you find out 2.53.1 is the version you want, you'd have to recreate your quest in that version (certain mass data export options would make that easier, but it could still be a nuisance).
