When you say "frame rate drops" do you mean slow down (lag)? Because technically a bad frame rate is not the same thing as lag or slowdown. Say an enemy is walking at regular speed but you only see 5 frames instead of 30- the enemy will appear to alternate between freezing in place and jumping/teleporting instead of taking actual steps. I suppose lag could be the only thing to cause dropped frame rates in a video game (so maybe they always occur together), but still, had to be the tech nerd for a moment

I think it's just frame drops, not actual slowdown, when walking around the overworld in certain areas, but it's most certainly lag when killing Moblins; the game actually comes to a complete standstill sometimes when fighting these things. Like... I'd say 15% of Moblins cause this issue.

Pretty much what TS said. I was being kind of vague, but it's dropped frames without slowdown, mostly, then definite slowdown, with lots of dropped frames when fighting Moblins sometimes. Maybe that's why they only have one horn now. That second horn would have bricked systems worldwide.

The Switch version renders the graphics internally at 900p and has increased draw distance for everything, the console is also more powerful. These changes will yield significantly different performance characteristics (I wouldn't be surprised if they scale down the drawn distance of unimportant stuff on the Switch version when in towns, unable to do this on the Wii U version because the draw distance for unimportant stuff is already low on that console and further reductions would be bad looking)
The Wii U has excellent draw distance for important stuff like land marks, shrines, lit lanterns, light sources, smoke plumes, enemies etc.

Minor correction, it renders at 900p and upscales to 1080p when docked.

Angry Joe actually did a review on this game, despite Nintendo's policies on YouTube videos. Turns out, he's never played a Zelda game before. While streaming the game, the chat convinced him that hitting a Cucco enough times would get him a secret item that would be useful.
You ever want to see a genuine unwitting victim of a Cucco massacre, he added the entire clip to his review video.

Mind you, it'll only do this if you have your Switch TV output settings set at 1080p. It is odd to me that they didn't include the option of rendering the game at 720p in docked mode seeing as the game does run a lot better like that. Simply setting your console's output settings won't have an effect on the performance. This isn't odd to me, it's just weird that they didn't include the option in-game considering they already do that when you take it out of docked mode. I'd honestly rather play at 720p with more stable framerates than see constant stutter at 900p.
Oh well, maybe we'll get this in a patch.

One thing I have been wondering watching gameplay- how far can you get in this game without using weapons? The spells seem to have a good many creative uses for battle. I've just been wondering that.

You can get up to the final boss without weapons I believe, if you skip all other content. I believe it might be possible to kill the bosses with the runes, but not sure.
EDIT: Main problem is that the only rune that can consistently do damage, only does one damage to high defense enemies, like guardians. This is a problem when enemies can have over 1k health.

Anything that isn't a Boss/Miniboss, Guardian and a few others can be pinned down with Bombs essentially, but some have ridiculous health and the bombs have a somewhat long cooldown if you don't switch between them. Beyond Bombs, only one rune has considerable use against enemies and it can't be spammed too often.
(Trying to keep spoiler free, but Bombs shouldn't really be spoilers, right?)

That's how I spent most of my time, honestly. The meat of the game is the exploration, and I loved every minute of it. Early on, after only a small amount of advancing the main plot I did so many things across almost the entire world before I tackled more of it. It was very liberating, especially after the railroading of certain recent entries, so that's probably why I did it. ![]()
