1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Bartering
4. Depression
5. PONIES
You're already working on the first stage. Not long now...Although I do hope anger passes quickly...I remember depression was probably my longest phase in learning to accept MLP...
You think I'm kidding, but the theory works here, too. Denial that a show for little girls could be entertaining. Then anger at the people who exposed you to it because you're not quite ready to accept responsibility for your own curiosity. Bartering with the fact that perhaps it's not so girly, and that it's actually a very manly show. Then depression because you feel like an absolute loser watching a show like this. And when that's all through...your room will be filled with plushies.

I watched a (rather enjoyable) episode MLP today, then later watched 2 episodes of Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends. It's the same kind of humor and writing (considering that Lauren Faust writes for both). Yet I got more enjoyment from Foster's Home. I think part of me is still in denial that MLP is actually a good show.
Could be that it's just not as good~
Don't assume that you're not giving it a fair chance, if you've voluntarily watched an episode that already shows that you put aside most of your biases. Give yourself the benefit of the doubt. I've watched more than a handful and I think anything that almost anything that was on Cartoon Networks Cartoon Cartoon block and most shows that share animators/directors with those are superior as well.

Speaking of the Midnight Castle special, I also watched that a while back. Pleasantly surprised. Perhaps not the greatest half hour to ever be committed to television, but it had an interesting setting, some (overly) catchy songs, and this surprisingly dark and moody atmosphere that just generally really impressed me. It was a fun enough 22 minute adventure. It also had this utterly delicious cheesy 80's cartoon feel that I absolutely loved. I can't stress strongly enough how much this aspect appealed to me. I don't know why I love silly stuff from the 80's so much, but I do. It's a weakness.
Oh, it also had sea ponies. I go back and forth on whether I think they're horrible abominations which should never have been allowed to exist or merely amusingly horrifying.

Well that's all fine and dandy but honestly if he's able to find it enjoyable then why not keep watching? Just sayin'.
I recently watched on YouTube an MLP intro compilation. It's sort of astonishing, the slow decay of quality the series suffered over the decades, starting from the Midnight Castle special until it degraded into whatever complete nonsense directly preceded FiM.

I plan on getting everyone over to my house for a viewing party. Of course, it'll be 8am, so everyone will be either dead tired, in a bathrobe, or both, but still...
