Also, the vast majority of dialog/cutscenes are skippable during New Game+ and/or if you die and have to repeat some conversations during that game session (I assume resetting the game will make you have to watch the cut scenes again, except in New Game+).

Oh and the water temple is more about utilizing the water available to you to progress and less about manipulating the water. Lastly, each Flame has it's own complete dungeon.

Regarding the silent realms, I've had mixed feelings about them, but I've come to enjoy them, and the sense of accomplishment you feel when you beat one is well worth it. Yeah, so, maybe they tacked them on to extend the gameplay, but IMO, they are still fun, and probably one of the most challenging aspects of the game. I haven't actually felt on edge, and like I was really at risk of 'dying' in a Zelda game in a long, long time. Maybe not even since the first Zelda, or when I was a lot younger, and played AlttP, and OoT. They are hard, and require quick reflexes. I think for all intents and purposes, they are pulled off nicely, and demand a certain level of skill, speed, and reflex. Good stuff.

Of course, I was filled with dread the first time I got a Light, err, Spirit vessel, cause I thought it was the BS tear of light deal from TP all over again, which I loathed, yet at the same time, appreciated, and accepted a bit more on my current, albeit, sporadic playthrough of TP on the Wii. I also hate PH with every fiber of my being, and the Temple of the Ocean king was the epitome of terrible design.

As for the game as a whole, all in all, I really enjoyed it, but it truly feels like Zelda is headed in a different direction. One of the problems is, the games are trying to be more narrative based, and this requires them to whip up new characters and settings. I feel that some of the charm held in the original games, and stories is lost cause all the plots now try to be new. TP was the last Zelda to take place in Hyrule, and feature Ganondorf, and cause of some clumsy design choices, it may have very well been the nail in the coffin for the "classic" Zelda formula. I would really honestly, more than anything like a 3D ALttP. IMO, TP, and OoT most accurately portray this. Every fan has his or her own subjective opinion on what is good about the franchise, and since it is so damn vast and varied, there are a lot of different fans to please.

For what it is worth, SS features some amazing dungeon, and overworld design, solid challenges, and good boss fights. It is a very fun game. The controls are decent, but there are definitely times when you are harshly taken out of the moment in a burst of frustration, cause often times do the controls not work how they should. I loath the bamboo slicing mini game cause I feel like the sword it not always as responsive as it should be. Using the bug catching net is absolute torture at times. Selecting items can be a bother, and all of this is easily fixable if Nintendo would stop being so damn stubborn and forcing us to use their damn motion/ touch controls. I honestly think the game would be just as good without the motion controls, cause honestly, there are only a few enemies that really require you to use certain slices, and since its a stab in the dark half the time with if they will work properly or not, I could do without, or at least have a classic controller option. Another minor nit pick is there seems to be so many fewer types of enemies in this game. I am mostly sad at the fact that we will most likely never ever have another Zelda with button controls, and a classic setting.

I will remain a fan to the series, but for me, I think the parts of the series I favored most are long gone. The series has always been made up of four parts for me: Exploration, Combat, Puzzle Solving, and Story. The games seem to be shifting more towards Story and Puzzle Solving, and while I enjoy the old stories, the new ones lack the same charm. I prefer exploration and combat as well, so it is a matter of taste.

QUOTE(Yoshimi @ Dec 27 2011, 01:33 PM)

Entered the first flame dungeon just now and I am... discouraged. I've never been fond of water dungeons in Zelda ever since OoT's Water Temple and I feel I've had enough of water in Skyview Temple and so forth. I really hope the Cistern is different than the typical headache-inducing raise water level or control water flow stuff.

I really liked the first three dungeons, though, so I hope this one won't let me down now.

My expectations for this level for low, but I must say, I enjoyed this dungeon greatly! They did not tortue me like they did in OoT, MM and TP! I enjoyed a Zelda water dungeon!
Seriously, though, I haven't been led down by the game much as of yet. I'm just somewhat annoyed of some minor (and considering the controls also major) issues, but there hasn't been anything yet that made be outraged, furious and/or sick with anger (yes, pun). I'm quite forgiving with the game, though, simply for the sheer visual beauty SS is. Seriously the best looking Zelda game in 25 years of Zelda.

Alrighty then.

Having only gotten the game on Christmas Day, I've had time to play up to the first dungeon. Here are some of my thoughts on it so far.

First off, I'm absolutely loving the graphics. I assumed they'd just be a mix of TP and WW's graphics, but it turned out to be a totally different beast. Of course, it trying to emulate oil paintings reminds me just a little too much of how Okami's graphics tried to emulate traditional Japanese art. But whatever.

Second, voices. I think this is the first time we've heard anything resembling characters' voices outside of grunts and shouts. Granted, all I've heard so far is Zelda's singing, and Fi's garbled computer-ish speech, but still.

Third, Fi. Let me say this: I have never been overly fond of the companion characters in any of the games. Even Tatl, in bloody Majora's Mask, my favorite game in the series, sort of grated on me. I didn't like her, I didn't like Navi, nor Midna, KoRL was just sort of ehh. But Fi... I really like this character. I'd have never expected them to bring any main Zelda character in such an odd direction. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing much of an actual character yet. But it's still early in the game. I do hope she has some proper character development as the story progresses.

Actually, while I'm on the subject of characters... Zelda. I'm really glad she's been promoted to something more than just being someone for Link to go save. Granted, Link does have to go find her, but from what I've seen so far, she's actually doing things, not just sitting in a room doing nothing but waiting to be saved.

And now for some griping!

... *Sigh*...
The controls.
Alright, well they're not that bad. But they're pretty bad. At least, flying the bird, and trying to control your falls. When I was trying to fly the Loftwing in the ceremony, the controls were simply broken. I'd move the controller to the right, and it would just sort of move slowly and lazily in that direction, Move the controller further to the right, no change. Move slightly to the left, the thing veers to the left. Move it to the right again, still moving left. Calibrating the controller would only solve the problem for a few seconds. Checked the position of the motion bar by the TV, no difference. Again, maybe I'm the only one with this problem. I probably was, too, because since then, I haven't had that big a problem with it.

On the subject of controls though, I gotta say the sword-play is pretty neat, and actually makes combat more interesting and full of different possibilities, showing that motion controls can be used for more than just a lame gimmick.

Edit: Oh, forgot about something. While it's not directly related to Skyward Sword, I'd like to mention it all the same. The Symphony CD that came with the game. I'm really liking most of the arrangements on here, the Gerudo Valley arrangement being one of my favorites so far. Though I do wish they had done some other songs. Maybe something from Link's Awakening, or Majora's Mask. A nice orchestrated arrangement of the Stone Tower Temple's theme would have been a really nice treat.

Tip for the Loftwing: Turn your wrist, don't move your arm. And give the Wiimote an upwards flick to make it flap its wings.

You want to twist the remote to turn, not point it in the direction you want to fly in and yeah, game fails at explaining how to flap to fly higher, just wave the remote up and down sharply.

Actually, I already knew to flap the controller up and down to fly upward. The game explained that fine, I thought. But yeah, next time I play the game, I'll try twisting the remote rather than turning. Thanks for the advice. icon_smile.gif

The loftwing and beetle take some getting used to but they work fine as long
as I don't need to make a sharp turn or slow down, then there are problems.

But I had those same problems with the seagull controls in Wind Waker, so
it's not the fault of the motion controls.

I believe I'm about to fight the final boss. (Or, at least enter the final dungeon.) I'd highly recommend this game. My new favorite Zelda. icon_smile.gif

EDIT:
I loved the ending. The way Hero Mode works is rather annoying but whatever. It is what it is!

I beat Skyward Sword. Overall, I give it a 9/10. Really my only complaint about this game is stabbing. It's VERY inaccurate and a pain in the ass especially when against enemies that require you to stab. Other than that, the presentation is outstanding, the gameplay is probably the best I've seen in a Zelda game. It's not just bashing the sword button or continuously shaking your Wii remote.

My Favorite Zelda games (updated):
#1 Ocarina of Time
#2 Link's Awakening
#3 Skyward Sword
#4 Spirit Tracks
#5 Twilight Princess

Time it took me to Beat: 45 hours.
Favorite Dungeon: The 3rd Dungeon
Least Favorite Dungeon: The 1st Dungeon
Favorite Area: Everything in the Lanaryu Province
Least Favorite Area: Eldin Volcano
Favorite Item: The Beetle
Favorite Boss Battle: The 5th Boss (Where you have you use the Whip)

Eldin Volcano and everything associated with it except for the

is the best content of the game. Especially the
Spoiler
is great (except for its Item).

I don't like Eldin that much primarily because I keep getting lost in that area. Its Silent Realm trial was the hardest IMO.

Also, more people having problems with stabbing? I don't get it; I've never had a problem trying to stab. icon_shrug.gif

Stabbing is alright after you get that you have to reach your arm as far as possible (which is a stupid thing) but the shield sucks. I'v never actually used it, because it sucks so much. Very possible to beat the game with enough backflipping.

Edit: Dawnlight, I agree about Din's Silent Realm. I liked the Silent Realms, though.

The only problem I've ever had with the shield is that the nunchuck can be too damn sensitive at times. That and there needs to be an easier way to lower it so I can actually point my sword around for Skyward Strikes.
