Hello
So we have to wait another 4 or 5 years to see if Midna returns?

To be honest, I doubt she will return at all unless they make a direct sequel to Twilight Princess. It's possible, but don't hold your breath. icon_unsettled.gif

Click on "My Controls" at the top of the page, then find "Signature" and paste your image code there to make that image appear at the end of every post you make. That's what people usually do with banners; it's a lot less work than pasting it every time.

I'mma put it out there right now: Midna was more annoying than Navi and I don't want her back unless she stays in the background as a story character and doesn't join you on your quest. The basic summary of why I hate Midna? ...

Midna: "WOAH WHAT HAPPENED, HERE? THIS IS VERY STRANGE! YOU SHOULD PROBABLY GO AND CHECK IT OUT, SHOULDN'T YOU? ... *a pause* WELL? WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? GO CHECK IT OUT!"
Me: "Gee, Midna, I might go check it out... IF YOU'D SHUT UP!!"

I hope she, nor any other helper, for that matter, show up in Skyward Sword. Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Twilight Princess pretty early on in their development revealed their helpers: Navi, Tatl, and Midna, respectively. I actually think I was on something of a video game hiatus when WW was revealed, so that one I didn't know much about from the beginning, but that one had no strict helper, which is one of the main reasons I love the game so much.

Now, Midna was not revealed in TP's first announcement trailer, but she was by the next trailer, and featured in the first Wii demo—I don't recall if she appeared in the first GCN demos or not. Hopefully the SS demo was a foretelling that there would be no helper, though I'm skeptic due to that blue figure appearing in the artwork and supposedly featuring prominently in the story, but maybe, just maybe, that won't mean she'll be a helper, just part of the story. Now, as long as she doesn't physically show up during gameplay, doesn't have an annoying voice, and you can ignore all but her most important messages, I'll give her some slack, but that's only if she was a helper; if she isn't, then we're all good and this rant was for nothing. icon_heh.gif

But yeah, I want the system WW had as far as helpers go: The little Pirate's Charm was what Tetra and the King used to communicate with you, and you could mostly ignore those if you wished. Of course, I'd rather have no helper at all, but, well, what are the chances of that happening. icon_shrug.gif

Just watched the trailer, I haven't really been paying attention to this game. It looks pretty good, but Link looks a little strange to me.

I have seen a lot of people comment on this. It seems that the character model for Link is a pretty faithful redesign of the Link from TP (Which is roughly the same Link, touched up, that we had in OoT). His tunic and such have been spruced up (no with under armor!), but otherwise, it's the realistic Link we have gotten used to over the past 15 years.

This realistic style does risk clashing with the painterly style of the rest of the game. Everything else is clearly stylized. Which is great for a fantasy game and great for conveying personality in general, but it create issues for Nintendo when considering how much realism should be maintained in areas that have traditionally been very realistic, like with Link. I think they should stylize him a bit more, personally. Maybe just emphasize the less human aspects of his character...

Hero mode might have less helpful advice being given then normal mode.

And what, pray tell, is "Hero Mode"? I think you have been hoodwinked by a set of rumors that has been proven false.

I think it was one of the rumors, but the Normal Mode supposedly had the "Super Guide" feature from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but Hero's Mode didn't. Like I said though, I think it was one of the rumors.

This has been made much more interesting. From the A Link to the Past manual. Read the "The Imprisoning War" section. About the Master Sword, particularly.

This... Oh man, I'm afraid now that Skyward Sword will now just be a massive spitting upon canon, unless they follow this. And now that I read it again, it throws OoT into newer focus, and would mean OoT isn't the source of the Imprisoning War, after all, since the manual claims the Master Sword was forged during the war, and yet it had been around for some time before OoT's beginning, in order to combat not only Ganondorf Dragmire, but the Triforce, as well.

Assuming Nintendo did not intentionally edit this fact, perhaps this means we'll not only see the true Imprisoning War, but also the Triforce and yet another incarnation of Ganon. Of course, there is no way to confirm this, but this is only assuming Nintendo doesn't want to eat canon again. So I don't know. This is all speculation at this point.

Man, I hope they remember that. Otherwise they'll have to retcon something, at least if the game is about what we think it's about. icon_biggrin.gif

Dude....You're just NOW figuring this out? No offense, but I discovered this months ago. And forget waiting on SS to screw with canon...The second OOT came out, there was a direct conflict, for the very reason you state (the Master Sword COULD NOT have been forged in response to the power of the triforce as wielded by Ganon. OOT is quite unambiguous in presenting the Master Sword as having been around for a good chunk of time before Ganondorf was even born).

There is, however, a way out.

Unfortunately, this throws any hope of discerning a timeline independently of Nintendo right out the window.

In Zelda there's no such thing as War.

It's just Link vs. Ganon and his minions.

Since when did other characters do anything?

That's why I hope that the "great war" just stays as a background story.

I only remembered that section in the ALttP manual since I was reading the archived TP discussion thread, and found my post where I used that to explain why the Triforce of Power vanished from Ganondorf's hand when he was stabbed by the Master Sword. I read it again out of curiosity and now I realize it.

So either SS has a chance to right that mistake and explain that section in ALttP's manual, or we're just plain screwed. icon_frown.gif

I have my doubts that Nintendo actually considers anything older than OoT canon now. I mean, they weren't really anticipating whatever Zelda game would be out in 2011 when they made ALttP. Screwed? I don't think so. I really don't see why this whole "timeline" thing is so important to some people.

Not so much "timeline" as "continuity." Small retcons aren't really that big a deal if they're minor details, but I'm not a big fan of huge overhauls. icon_unsettled.gif

Guys, can I say something? That's the American manual for LttP. NoA changes a lot of stuff when they localize it. For all we know the Japanese version might not say that. I'm not disproving it or anything, I'm just saying don't start panicking until you check what the Japanese version said.

People seem to think that the Japanese versions of Nintendo games or media are somehow wildly different from their Western releases. I highly doubt that's the case. Yes, they do write the manuals, etc. separately, and yes, there may be changes, but that doesn't make whatever it says in the Japanese version absolute word of god.
