New character.... Dude, how do you know all this stuff? O.o

The hype though!

I obviously don't blame you for not telling the new character. It is a NEW character though right? Please tell me it's not Pichu >.<

-Strike

I know all this because I have friends who tell me these things who are in the back room. And yes, it will be a NEW character and not Pichu. Supposedly, some of the back room members have gotten to play the early build of the character, so I'm fairly certain my inside source is telling the truth.

The rumored five are Skull Kid, Lyn, Isaac, Sami and Knuckles. Those were "leaked" a long time ago, along with alternate costumes such as SNES Falcon. Maybe they have changed plans since the "leak" (which was around february? march? I dunno). Either way, Skull Kid and Sami are "safe", in the sense thay they aren't in Smash 4 and they would give the Project M less headaches with legal stuff. Knuckles belongs to SEGA, and maybe SEGA won't be as glad to quietly accept the mod as Nintendo. We have Lucina in Smash 4, and while Lyn would probably have a different moveset... And I don't persobally care about Isaac lol.

Most people believe Skull Kid is gonna be the first newcomer. The Project M team has showed many #47 in some promotional material since many months ago. The #47 would refer to Melee's Event 47, which is a stock match in a Majora-shaped stage. The #47 would also be the final number of characters in the final roster of Project M.

Personally I would love to see Skull Kid (yay Majora's Mask rep!) and Sami (Nintendo Wars is underrepresented). I don't care about the rest, specially Knuckles ("featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series!").

Maybe it's just me, but the HD Smash 64 stages showed so far, the only one I like is Dreamland. Metal Cavern looks so much saturated in elements in the background it's a liytle eye distracting, and I think Hyrule Castle just looks plain wrong. But at least it's some impressive work.

I, personally, LOVE the HD remasters. It's funny, considering I have severe attention deficit, but I don't find backgrounds on stages to be too distracting. They are sort of an "OOH! AAH!" sort of thing and then once that is done, I hardly notice them while I'm focused on my opponent. I guess smash is one of the few things I can actually have an attention span on. :P Also, I think the new Hyrule Castle 64 looks stunning. :)

My two problems with HD Hyrule Castle are a visible and a subtle one.

The visible one is that the stage looks damn small. The N64 and PM 3.0 version suggested you were playing in the roof of a big castle, so high that you could see Death Mountain in the background. The stage looks and plays boring, yes, because the colours are mostly too brown and dark, but at least it suggested you were playing in a highly important place of Hyrule, yet there were far more places in the world. On the other side, the HD, 3.5 version shows the entire castle, and looks even smaller than WW's Hyrule Castle, and in the middle of nowhere. There is one nearby house for no reason, and while there are a few hills and elevations in the background, along with a dragon popping up sometimes... it looks there's nothing else. So if this is Hyrule Castle... what's its purpose? Does the Royal Family live here? Where are the citizens of Hyrule? What's going on? Remember we're talking about a series that took the series' universes so seriously than in Melee it indicated the actual world they were taken out. Great Bay wasn't just Great Bay, it was also a place from Termina, and everytime I play in Great Bay I feel I have been actually teleported to that world. HD Hyrule Castle does not give me that vibe, and while the N64 version wasn't that great, I think it gave a better job.

And this points me to the subtle problem: I don't know if this is a generic location from the Zelda universe, a specific place from a specific game, or both. I don't know of this is a OoT reference, a WW reference, a TP reference... Or just a castle. The original N64 Hyrule Castle looked like a generic place, yes, like Dreamland and Mushroom Kingdom or Congo Jungle. Or Melee's Temple. But Great Bay, Bridge of Eldin, Pirate Ship... those were from specific dimensions. HD Hyrule Castle is too bright, it has its own art style that does not fully mimic OoT 3D or any other game in the franchise, but at the same time I think they are trying to make reference to many games, an example of this are the OoT-styled wood signs. It's very confusing.

I figured I'd show this too. This was on the Project M twitter page.

Say hello to Ganondorf's new spotdodge and roll animations befitting the King of Darkness.

Also:
7OOTDAU.jpg

Also, his neutral B is no longer the warlock punch and is instead a reflect.

His forward Smash is now a magic punch sort of move.

And with that, you can now consider Ganondorf DECLONED.

Stamina mode now removes dying in the blast zones and instead makes you come from the opposite side you were sent flying to. (Like some of the levels in Super Mario Bros. 3)

And now, I give you another thing they did for Ganondorf. This is pretty legit even though it requires your opponent to be next to you and stand absolutely still.

Also, I think the Pokemon might getting their own Final Smashes.

And now, for this big huzzah, here's a BUNCH of new alternate costumes that will be in 3.5.

Nice job. :) I can't wait for 3.5 to come out. It's having the last few bugs worked out before release last I heard from a friend of mine who is in the back room.

Well Project M 3.5 was released while I was hibernating. I am LOVING the changes. And they even gave Roy a new color that I am IN LOVE WITH! I'll be using that costume at every tournament I go to. :D
For anyone curious, here's the changelog.

I might stream some Project M tonight. I can go over stuff and show some advanced stuff if you guys want. If the stream goes up, I'll post it in my streaming topic. When that happens, just ask me whatever you want to know.

I have played 3.5 a few hours.

I must say I'm not as impressed or excited as I though. Yeah... Debug Mode is technically impressive, and Stamina is fun, but most of these new things were announced too far before this version's release. Have Debug Mode being announced a few weeks ago, that would have been another thing.

SSE is boring even with Melee-like gameplay. The Showdown should have been the final event of the game, rather than Event 40 and its one-stock match. I think the PMDT should have made their own Events rather than replacing the buggy ones and leaving everything else the same.

All-Star Versus isn't as funny as I though it would be. The new costumes... some are terrible (Shinobi Squirtle, JSR Sonic) but most of them are pretty good. Sadly, some of the HUD portraits... uggggh, too amateur for PMDT's standards. And I fon't like the new Menu design.

And some of the awful AI bugs are still in 3.5. Such as the enemy dancing around you if you spam neutral B. I have seen a new bug where Mewtwo would just roll from one edge of one of Battlefield's mid-air platforms to the other if there's a rival below that platform.

Now the good stuff:

Some of the enemy's AI has gone smarter (the best example are the spacies, they react differently), and the characters have been overall nerfed and re-balanced. It's too early to talk about tiers, but sone of the characters does not feel too "auto"-based. Mario can still connect a lot of its attacks between each other, but he struggles more to land succesfully and maintain the advantage. Same with Mewtwo, or Lucas. Haven't tested Roy and Diddy yet.

The new animations are wonderful. Charizard is maybe the most improved character in this matter, but Ganondor ffeels closer to his Melee version now, and now he's completely different to Falcon in feel (and even gameplay). Mewtwo's tail arc, Firebird and Firefox, all those attacks looks better than ever.

The camera is... different? I dunno, but it feels it zooms closer to the characters when they're in the same place of the stage. If this is true (and not just sone placebo effect), good job PMDT.

And the most important thing...

...there were many, many times when my brain believed I was playing Melee and not a mod of Brawl.

I had that feeling sonetimes with 3.02, but those moments were rare and scattered. Now I have had several matches when the efrect lasted for minutes before something broke it. I'm not sure if this is just a placebo effect, but I like it.

That's beautiful. It seems the PMDT is finally achieving their goals, and I'm fine with it.

Project M 3.6 has been announced!

They also released their April fools video.

Is it bad that I kind of want the Smash 64 one to be an actual thing? :P
