Shane's Review Number Two
Link's Stupid Quest By Ventus

I've decided to make most of my reviews short - but critical. Because long posts aren't my thing. icon_shrug.gif

A fairly small 2.5 Quest made by Ventus, it's built in the classic set and has 4 small dungeons and overworld areas. You start off
weaponless but fortunately you get the sword straight way. But before that a small intro string pops up but blends in with the ground making it hard to read.

IPB Image
It says somewhere stupid BTW

3 screens in and I found a small bug, unfortunately.

IPB Image
Why did the octorok cross the pit? Cause Ventus made it walkable!

Puzzles are easy, I guess seeing this quest is meant to be boredom or stupid, I guess it's legit. If I look into that perspective- this
one is my favourite.

IPB Image
icon_thumbsup.gif Shane likes this puzzle.

Oh and spiky mountains and trees are pretty creative.

IPB Image
LOL Shane loves pointy death.

One minor flaw you have to beat all the enemies before you move the blocks. And worst of all? One of these enemies are leevers.

IPB Image
Yous guys are late... FOR DEATH!

Also combo cycling bug made me rage quit, sadly. icon_frown.gif

IPB ImageIPB Image
Shortcut to death.

So guys here it is my concluding thoughts.

Positives:
+ Nice length
+ Very fun
+ Very creative

Negatives:
- Somewhat buggy
- A few boring puzzles

4/5

Would you care to explain this remark? I just want to see where you're coming from.
I mean, poor use of unwalkable combos could ruin a quest... Just not sure what
you mean because scripting is just a tool like combos are. It's not the tool's
fault if it is misused, but tools can certainly be used properly.

I think you pretty much explained it yourself. It's all about balance and it's up to the questmaker to do it right. Some scripts just don't fit some quests as well as others. An example of this would be using the Epona script in a Mario quest. Or at all because of how old and buggy it is. I feel every scripted feature Russ added fit the quest.

Review

Thanks for the review. I enjoyed reading it!. And yeah the reason the puzzles was very easy, is I wanted a super simple stupid game. lol, At least it got a 4 star rating from someone.

I really was in a slump when making this, but making this game made me want to get back to work on "The journey of link"
And I finally did get it done icon_biggrin.gif, I recommend if you have no motivation on working on a big project. Take a break and make a simple game or somthing, like I did icon_smile.gif.

And thanks again Shane, Can wait to see another review!.

Don't worry; I found a perfect game to play! Sorry it took some time - mainly busy with life.

EDIT: Good news, review will be up sometime today.

When I heard about this game, I knew this wasn't your standard Zelda Classic game, especially since this was made by Avataro, who created two other small creative games called "Temple Runner" and "Fight the Monsters". So I downloaded this and I had a high expectations for this, got up to Level 10, I've seen a lot of amazing stuff up to this point, as well as a few cons but anyways:

Visuals:

This quest borrows various tiles from classic and DoR recoloured and fitted into this new tileset, and I must say, I love how it looks, it's got that adventurous feel that supports the title "Island Adventure". But the island looks mostly barren, a few plants -- besides palm trees -- would have done the trick. some could have replaced rocks. Another thing is that most of the tiles are bigger then the palm tree graphic (and the house, in this case) but I can't blame him since I assume his goal was to fit everything in one, single tile, but stretching the palm tree one tile higher would've worked out better, plus it would've been a great addition as it's overhead tile could have hid various blocks and coins behind it, but that would have killed the purpose I see of this set.

IPB Image
Personally, I find the graphics so pretty but a few things said above kinda ruin it for me.

Gameplay:

Level 1 started out simple, mainly just walking across the island reaching the house -- the objective of each standard level -- giving you that basic "this is your objective of each level" feel, which is perfect for a Level 1. Level 2 then introduced push blocks... did I mention you can push them into water? That was another touch that makes this game feel so special and unique, because I was expecting they had to stay on land. A few levels after introduces these lock blocks blocking your way to the house, to unlock them, you must collect all the gold coins on the screen and place them in the lock block to proceed. Another touch that makes gameplay so fun.

IPB Image
This game most certainly has creative block puzzles.

IPB Image
Lock blocks that require all coins is a work of a pure genius.

Can this get any better? It gets a whole lot more fun! A few levels after that, there was this X engraving on the ground, which is basically where you need to place the block, but the previous introductions (which introduced the blocks and coins) weren't as easy as this, making this level feel uninspired which is kinda a let down. But then we start seeing a combination of all of these puzzles, making gameplay increase difficulty, but it's exactly what I was expecting!

IPB Image
I'll admit, this puzzle was easy, but perfect for a introduction of those X engravings, but still, too easy IMO.

IPB Image
A combination of everything? Now we getting somewhere!

I stopped after the completion of Level 12, which introduced spikes. And supposedly this quest will introduced two other puzzles using the bombs and raft, too bad I could get up to that point and too bad I couldn't get to the boss either, I was hoping to review that to.

Audio:

N/A

Suggestions/Pros/Cons:
  • Maybe improve on the palm tree.
  • Maybe improve the island that introduces the X engravings and add a little more difficult.
  • Maybe more themes for the islands?
  • Many a few puzzles that center around a key and a keylock?
  • A health bar perhaps?
Pros:
  • Nice graphical style choice.
  • Fantastic gameplay, ranging from blocks to coins.
  • Amazing concept, exploring various islands.
Cons:
  • A easy level, between two hard puzzling levels.
  • Slightly odd tiles.
  • Having a health bar.
Overall, it's a nice, fun and small quest to play when you bored! (I think I officially found out that I have a soft spot for small quests...)

5/5

Hey, Poke, Are you going to review any more quests? If so, how about you review IMAQWICHBS TLoZ: A New Dawn. I would be curious about how you'd review that one.

I agree! This quest is actually pretty perfectly amazing...

Hi Shane, thanks for the review. I'll comment on a few things:
My goal on the "introduction levels" was to make them easy, so you understand the new object that's introduced. Blocks, coins, bombs and rafts are not everything. In this game there are 14 introductions, wich allow for many different puzzles, including those blue/red block switches and these "step all tiles exactly once" puzzles from the gameboy zeldas. Health bar is not needed because everything that can hurt you, will instant kill. I wish you would've played more.

thanks

I would never dream of reviewing anything unless I had finished it. Finished it twice would be ideal so I could properly describe in detail all the strengths and weaknesses and walk the player through the quest. Of course, for me to finish any quest twice, it would have to be in my sweet spot zone. But hey, you should only review what you like because to do otherwise would kill your motivation.

Poke, I'd like to chime in and say I've enjoyed reading this thread, especially your dismantling of Castchaos's cousin of powers (?) quest. Note that I only played the first ballad from CC and in general I'm a fan of his work, but if something's bad then you're the man to come out and tell us just HOW bad it is. I also enjoyed your quests (I've played all of them I think), especially you only live once. That featured extensive use of roc's feather, and that one level where you had to fly through the spikes - BRUTAL difficulty, on caliber with AQ/Liberation.

My one recommendation is for you to do a review on Armageddon quest/AQ forever, as well as Liberation of Hyrule, which I've seen you post in threads for those quests every now and then, so I think that you could write a very interesting review with screenshots and comments on how you truly felt playing those games.
