After rereading some posts and seeing some comments off the boards, I feel like I need to clarify something. When I said in an earlier post "the joke shots are s***," I was really referring to the fad, not the shots themselves; obviously it didn't come off that way. And I shouldn't have added "there's no denying that" because it's all a matter of one's opinion. But I'd like to point out I never said anything about stopping the fad; it was this stupid overblown set of reactions from nearly all of the users that posted here that set me off to the point I couldn't see straight. So, I apologize if I offended anyone; it was not intended. Anyways... moving on.

Twilight Knight - This... just looks like an epic style clash to me. The castle walls really stand out, and not in a good way. And the screen itself is rather... emptyish. Plus, is the left part of the castle wall supposed to be sticking out over the water like that?

Furion - A very, very job well done. I love to see incredibly creative use of the Classic set, and this is incredible. (Never mind that a lot of these tiles weren't in the original classic set. icon_deformed.gif ) Second place for me, easily.

Sheik91 - Call me crazy, but I like this shot. It's kinda trancelike in a way. I could even see it used in some sort of odd, psychedelic cutscene in a quest. Not one I would vote for, but, well, I just like how it looks. And I'm not even sure why.

Alison - Ignoring the horrible distortion of the screenshot, looking at the screenshot in ZQuest itself, it's actually quite a nice Classic shot. Simple yet elegant, as cliche as that term is.

ChunkeM0nkey - You do well in trying your best to make a somewhat nonfunctional tileset at least seem functional. ... ish. Still, you take something that doesn't work very well and you usually make it look good, so points for that. icon_smile.gif

Ventus - The perspective is all wrong, but you can't really take the blame there because of the limitations of objects in the Classic shot. Other than that, very well done; it's a very neat shot and I'm sure looks great in-game. (The rain kinda makes it hard to make out completely for me in still form, but that's fine.)

blackbishop89 - This critique is empty. icon_smile.gif ... kidding. But there's seriously nothing I can say here— wait I just said thirteen words plus these last ten oops <-- that was eleven

Adem - Very nice Z1 first screen remake. I almost couldn't tell at first. You did a very good job of making sure the core elements were there but giving new life to it. I like it. Well done. icon_biggrin.gif

William - no swearing allowed ur shot is b&!!! and disqualified no but, underneath the "ass" (lulz), it's actually a fairly well-designed screen. Just put some real content in it and it'd be a contender. icon_deformed.gif

Shane - ... like with blackbishop89 I have no words but too late I typed them also I just used the same joke twice in one post I am a horrible person icon_neutral.gif

Pokemonmaster64 - The palette is horrid, but you and I both knew that. Otherwise, it's a decent DoR screen. icon_shrug.gif

Robin - penis

Dawnlight - I usually don't vote for dungeon shots but this one was very well done. Actually feels like it could have come from ALttP. So... I guess that's high praise from me, being the hardcore ALttP fan that I am. icon_heh.gif Seriously though, well done.

Ebola Zaire - Probably my third-place pick. And it even has the crows from ALttP so that makes it even better. icon_deformed.gif No but really, very well designed shot, good use of perspective and good shading, although the pillar on the left would be the only issue unless something on the screen next to it is preventing you from walking onto it. But well done. icon_biggrin.gif

Okay first lets get this outta the way..You did not offend me..okey dokey lets move on

Yeah i know getting the perspective right in Classic is hard
But it does look better in game.
I made new rain so it won't be so hard to see as-well
But thanks icon_smile.gif

And ONE MORE THING!!....

The Robin Critic you made Is the Dumbest thing i've seen all day icon_odd.gif Sorry but i had to point out that this was totally weird..

I can honestly say the only "artistic" shot here that really resonates with me here is Sheik's. Jolly job well done here, *voted*, and I shall see about entering next week. Maybe.

I'd also like to point out that the odd screens actually do have some statement or message behind them.

Mine is an artistic statement.
Alsion's seems to be a statement about etiquette.
blackbishop89's seems to be a statement about "most detailed screenshot of the week"-habits here at PZC.
William's seems to be a "I don't give a flying f***"-statement.
Shane's seems to be a statement about ZC noobs.
Pokemonmaster64's seems to be a statement about DoR elitism.
Robin's seems to be a statement about following an "ideology" (if you can say that religions are ideologies) without questioning it (hence those "zombies").

Of course all of them are to be taken rather lightly, as some indeed seem to be supposed to be jokes (and they still just are that: ZC screens), but there's a certain serious tone "behind" some of these.

Personally, I don't feel that all of these are appropriate (especially William's and Shane's) but they are perfectly valid contributions to this contest and there seems to be more intellectual value (not quite the word, but I lack a better term) to them than to the "serious" screens (as those don't have any message whatsoever, which is also perfectly fine).

Yes and also...
  • How unprofessional, lazy, non-passionate a shot in Zquest is.
  • How many people throw random stuff on the ground that would not make sense (the blocks for instance)
  • Open Corners

But nothing about how everyone is making projects they'll never complete? *Points to caption*

OMG! I just realized Ebola had a shot just creeping down there. That is an EXCELLENT GB shot! I love how you pulled off the height effect there, especially with the shadow on the water. And you know what, the Gameboy Color might have been able to handle something like that, as you didn't even add any more colors to the shadow-water tiles; just darkened the base. If I had noticed this, I'd have voted for this instead icon_smile.gif.

D'oh how did I forget that one!? Lately I've been seeing a lot of people turn against gameplay and rather go with detail (with the exception of Dawnlight, EZ, Robin, Moo2wo, Poke, Shoelace and Radien (and a few more that I can't really remember right now icon_frown.gif)) I mean looking I see a lot of good looking quests but lack excellent gameplay quality. I would die to play a game that focuses on new gameplay puzzles rather then a detailed quest with boring overused puzzles. I also like to add that the said people (I bracketed) keep their details at a minimum there fore looks pleasing to eye unlike most shots filled with junk (wooden planks for example) and will probably take less the time to make then a detailed but boring quest that will probably end up failing. I'm kind of tired right now so if their is anything that doesn't make sense please let me know. (icon_razz.gif)

That's because lately some people tend to treat ZC like an art studio rather than progressing with making a "real" quest.

Videogames are art, though, in a certain way. It's just a common misunderstanding that art has to look good. In fact, I don't know another thing that might be as hard to define as art.

I prefer to think that video games CAN be art, as can pretty much any creative endeavor,
however, I think certain standards should be met to qualify as art. By the way, I do
know Magritte, but not the particular piece you are referencing, can you link me to it?

I think it's only a part of the painting and the quality is a pain. I forgot it's title.

Also, about art: You could literraly poop on a table, put a spotlight on it, call it "The Riddance" and you'd have a piece of art by almost any definition of art. Definitions of art are and have to be very liberal.

Everything is art, some art has better quality.

That depends on your measures for quality. It's subjective after all, that's really all you can say.
