Here is the starting map for the project I'm working on. I've gotta say, it's one of my favorite maps I've ever made. It's just so homey~! (It looks a bit detail heavy when viewed like this, but individual screens don't feel quite as cluttered.)

:eng101: Tree, you should teach folks how to make maps. That's amazing. I wouldn't settle for anything less for my mapping these days!

Wow, thanks DFW! That means a lot coming from an excellent quest maker like you. My inspiration continues to burn hotly <3

Here's what I've been working on for the past week or so.

http://i1008.photobu...zpsyetjm5jw.png

It's still a work in progress, but I'm liking how it's turning out. I'm not sure if I'll keep the palette of the "Grasslands", though. It's kinda... archaic.

EDIT: Photobucket. Go home, you're drunk.

That's a pretty good map. I dig the little pond with the islands and all. I disagree with some of the tile choices, but that's just me being uneasy with DoR's style blending(/clashing).

The original pallet was ugo as furk, so I changed it, and it looks loads better, IMO. It feels much more Zelda-y.

Hot damn Tree! You are on a role. You seem to have the same mapping mentality as me when it comes to corners as in...never leave a screen corner unfilled and ensure there is a solid object in each corner....otherwise it feels...'open' and unfinished. Especially given the screen by screen format. The use of layering and height/elevation changes in mountains is superb and rivals anything I ever accomplished in Lost Isle/Origin. My only concern is that small mountain ridge in the lower left, it is by itself and seems to be placed there as an afterthought rather than integrated well into the overall 'terrain map' of the area. When I start building an area, I ALWAYS start with the mountain ridges/elevation changes and work them through the overall map area, then I start working on rivers/oceans/lakes, then trees/foilage and other main structures, then finally down to paths/walkways/bridges and small minute details. Work big to small and your maps will always come out awesome. Keep it up! I definitely want to test this bad boy out before its released! I don't think I've been this excited for a quest since I left ZC!

I certainly get what you're saying. That little mountain near the entrance to the future beach was kinda just put there to divide the map up a bit. In fact, I think I originally plopped a couple of trees down first, then changed it to mountains just to make the terrain seem more varied. That's probably the only area in the map that I think is kinda meh. As for keeping corners filled, that's how I feel about it too. Even when I'm trying to make parts of the overworld feel more like an open field, I still plop a rock/stump/other object down to make the screen feel more contained. Unfortunately, we don't have fancy Z3-style scrolling, so we're kinda stuck with Z1/Gameboy style screen design... not that we can't pull off some awesome things in that style, but still.

Anyways, thank you so much for your input, DFW! I've been playing Origin lately, and have honestly been blown away by the overworld design, so seeing you give such positive feedback on my maps makes me feel all good n' stuff. As for testing, I definitely could use some testers and possible mentors, so if you're interested, hit me up!

Not much different from the last one. Added a little extra here and there. I have mainly been working on houses and caves. Should the clouds stay in? Or is it a no go?

Should the clouds stay in?

It's hard to say. Looking at this particular overall map view, it seemed very clear to me what they were. But, trying to imagine it on a screen-per-screen basis, I think they might look like random dark spots until people walk around more and put together enough of the overworld that they can either imagine the overall picture, or assemble enough of a spacebar map to see what we're seeing now.

So, that's neither a yes or no. Just something to think about.

Most of the shore, the rest is just laid out. This is one of the first places you head to in the game.

I know that the town looks a little bad. I haven't had time to rip some dock looking tiles, or even houses.

!5 imaginary bonus points if you can tell me which of my existing quests this map is for. (Pardon the clumsily cut and pasted together map.)

The one you thought about giving a sky area for warping the flute brings you to? Though honesty looks a bit odd to me, a reduction to less screens with maybe two areas at once might help a lot. You also could make costum palletes to put the different ground areas on one screen to create a better transition, regarding the amount of tiles and colors you use 4 c-sets should be enough.

Actually, I already did a sky area warp zone... in Passage Through Time. This is a warp zone for the quest that came before that. As for combining the different palettes... I have no idea how to do that. I made it the way it is to reflect the areas you warp in from.
