So, I switched from the original Metroid Prime to the version with Wii controls. Oh my God does it make a huge difference! I managed to reclaim a couple days worth of progress in only a couple hours, didn't lose a single life, and actually got to go farther than I had managed before.
I did notice a few changes, though. My original GameCube version didn't have nearly as many War Wasps everywhere. I realized it was because this version has the hives actually spawn them continuously while the old game only had them spawn them once. I don't know if it was an intentional change, a bug fix, or what, but my typical strategy of clearing out a room completely before doing anything wasn't getting me anywhere for quite a while until I realized I had to start actively destroying hives.
The room where you first obtain the Morph Ball seemed a bit different, with a ton more of those little beetle enemies appearing than what had happened before.
I'm starting to think that just possibly, the developers may have added more enemies, but made them individually weaker to compensate for the added ease that the motion controls give the player. I may be wrong, but even if that is the case, the motion controls make this game a lot easier, and a lot more fun. For one thing, I didn't have to worry about accidentally falling in the acid water during the fight against the wasp generating machine for the first Missile pack.
Also, you guys remember the trick from Super Metroid where you could time your bomb placement just right and manage to slowly fly across rooms? Is it supposed to work in this game, because if it isn't, then I think I might have sequence broke or something and gotten a Missile pack too early. I found a room where you needed to activate three locks on a huge box surrounding a Missile pack, and you activate them using bombs. The lowest lock is at floor level, the middle lock requires a bomb jump, and the highest lock was reachable by doing a double bomb jump. The thing is, the timing was so difficult that I'm starting to think that there was an upgrade I'm supposed to get later that I was supposed to use instead. (I'm playing this without a guide or map or anything)
Anyways, I managed to beat the plant boss, earn the Varia Suit, and accessed Magmoor Caverns with three Energy Tanks and 15 Missiles. So far, that plant boss was probably one of the most creative Metroid bosses I've ever seen, and was a lot of fun to fight. (I've only played Zero Mission, Super Metroid, and Metroid Fusion, but never actually finished Fusion. I had to wipe the hard drive that the emulator and ROM were on, and was only at the Nightmare battle.) Are the rest of the bosses like this, because the strategy behind this made me think a lot of a Zelda boss, and I'm starting to get some ideas from this game that I really want to try playing around with.
