It's because the Wiimote makes this game's HUD terribly large, and adding a minimap would just be too much.

Also I haven't played it yet, I'm just basing this on screenshots.

Only one UI mode does that, the others can easily fit a minimap.

What is this I don't even

EDIT: I'm not the only one who can't hit him, right? RIGHT?!

He was about to french him lol, just kidding yall. But yeah, I beat the snot out of him. When I was fighting him I noticed that his hand is positioned wherever your sword is when he starts coming towards you. So what I did was I would raise my sword up and then his hand would be up in the air. Then I would quickly slash up from below and then I would have him open for all of my attacks.

Been playing as much as I can between football and getting ready to go to my friend's. It is sexy. It's different than what I expected (even though I was expecting it to be different icon_deformed.gif ), but so far, I like it. Just beat the first dungeon and the Skyloft sidequest after it. This game gives you plenty to do, and I love it. And from what I'm seeing, the navigation works somewhat like WW's, so I don't think I'll have many complaints in the end as I thought. It took me a bit of time to get used to the controls properly, but I've managed to slide into them and it's going a bit more smoothly so far.

Strangely, what I had the most trouble with were minor enemies. O_o Well, I ended up losing a life to Ghirahim but as usual I practiced my tradition of ALWAYS CARRY A BOTTLED FAIRY, DAMMIT so I survived to beat him on the first go. That... surpassed WW Gohma as the best first boss. And it was definitely better than the one-on-one swordfights against Ganondorf in both WW and TP. Well, WW's had a better ending but the fight itself... that was great. And Ghirahim himself has me hooked on the story and I want to know more dammit. Also, I read his lines in Leeron's English voice from Gurren Lagann. icon_deformed.gif

Also, random tidbit: I just realized that Link's dashing animation is almost identical to his running animation from that cutscene in TP, when Ilia and Colin get kidnapped by Bulblins and Link wakes up and takes off running after them. Not sure if it's exact, probably not, but it's really close. Just a random thought I thought was neat.

I waited a few seconds after he got close to me, then I slashed him in the opposite direction. The second half was much easier IMO, or at least less confusing trying to figure out.

Where the hell are the fairies?! I saw two, but my bottles were full at the time, and I can't remember where I saw them!

Just curious NoeL, how do you feel about the overworld style revamp?
To be honest I didn't notice it. I found it very similar to Windwaker in how punctuated it is, but even TP minimised overworld exploration. I generally just follow the story and move from place to place when playing Zelda anyway, so the "exploration" in previous titles were more like "getting lost" for me. There's still plenty of nooks and crannies to explore in each area, and a few side quests on the overworld.

Wow am I impressed with the first forest area! FINALLY a 3-D forest environment that allows total freedom
of exploration. None of the large "rooms" in Twilight Princess that make up a "forest". There's ledges that you can access
and explore beyond the main paths. And the layout was totally awesome, it expanded in all directions with twist and
turns and multiple circuitous paths. So much more than the previous 3-D forest "paths" with occasional caves.

Well I can tell you right now that this game is challenging. It's pretty tricky to know what direction you have to swing your sword.

I only saw two as well so far, in that little hall thing with the woman with the super-pointy hat (also random tidbit: There's a Sheikah symbol on her back) and another I think in the first Temple. But yes, they're hard to find and I already find myself wishing for places to find easy fairies. Maybe they will later on in the game. icon_shrug.gif

Also watching my friend who has never played a Zelda game or a Wii game period trying to navigate Eldin Volcano was funny. Lots of falling in lava. And his first instinct when seeing a bunch of bomb flowers: Slice at them and then blow up. It... was lulz-inducing.

Also my friend has a huge widescreen TV that I have it hooked up to; going back home to my smaller full-screen TV that forces widescreen mode on me is gonna suck. icon_heh.gif

So today I completed the first temple icon_smile.gif

The only minor thing that bugs me is that there are less hearts to collect.
I love collecting hearts. You start with six, which at first seems absurd,
but it lets you learn the combat system without having to face enemies
that don't pose any threat. Unfortunately there are 4 pieces to a Heart
Container this time, not 5.

I am loving the combat- this is the first Zelda in a LONG while where I have
felt the need to stop and think. Especially the Skulltulas are well conceived. icon_smile.gif
Also it is so awesome to be able to use the spin attack in 3-D for once.
It never really worked in 3-D before unless it was in the Wii version of TP
(I only played the GCN version).

Also THANK YOU Nintendo for allowing me to remove some (if not all) of the screen clutter

I've been avoiding this thread for awhile because I figure spoilers are inevitable, but I wanted to come back for a moment to report my first day with the game. icon_smile.gif

So far: very happy with it. Yes, it does take a bit of adjustment to get used to the controls, but I find them very satisfying. icon_smile.gif Fighting is difficult, but after every victory I feel pretty satisfied. I liked the N64/Gamecube control scheme perfectly well, but it's a refreshing change nonetheless.

The thing I've had the most trouble with is flying. icon_neutral.gif Having to use extreme all-directional motions in an ACCURATE manner, while performing very specific gestures, can be really challenging.

But so far the game is doing exactly what I hoped: redeem the Wii control system and make it GOOD. This is the first immersive game I've played that uses the nunchuk and actually manages to make it feel RIGHT. I hope this revitalizes the Wii and leads to new good games, rather than "bookend" it like I've heard some people predict. icon_unsettled.gif

Oh, and on a quick additional note: the music in this one is *especially* good. It competes with Wind Waker and Spirit Tracks for best soundtrack in my opinion. icon_smile.gif Koji Kondo always seems more inspired by the cel-shaded Zelda games...

So I ran around Eldin Volcano a bit myself after letting my friend mess around. I'm fairly impressed, but I feel stupid because of not figuring out one way to go for a while. Very stupid, even though I was given a hint. Heh heh... whoops. But I stopped after diving into a cave, which reminds me: Bird statues. At first, I groaned; I didn't like this save system in Majora's Mask. But it's actually a very good system, since there are plenty of statues to save at. Plus I guess that whole "this is only a temporary save" part of the owl statues sorta helped weigh in on my dislike of them in MM. icon_deformed.gif

What was wrong with it before? It worked the same way it did in 2D games, and the instant spin attack was hard to pull off in OoT and MM, but I never saw it as not working. O_o

And another thing: If you flick the remote in any direction, he'll flap and go higher. Why they didn't explain that in the tutorial is way beyond me... and what up with the times when the Loftwing randomly starts flapping wildly and slowing down and losing altitude? icon_unsettled.gif

Wind Waker maybe, but I didn't find Spirit Tracks' soundtrack to be very... memorable. I remember, like, two tracks from that game. And that's about it. As for SS's music itself, I enjoy it for the most part, but for some reason, I went into the flying section one time while playing Gusty Garden Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy. And somehow... it just seemed to fit. icon_heh.gif

Shouldn't we make a separate thread for discussing the game now that it's out so that those who don't want spoilers can read this thread without fear? Not all of us have this game yet (Comes out 24th).
