A buddy of mine has an interesting discussion for online tournaments going on...
Source
So... should we start a separate thread for tournament stuff? I'm going try hard as hell to try to get an internet connection, a Wii and SSBB; but I can at least play against a few of my buddies even if I can't get a connection.
I think one tournament which is 1-on-1, stock 3, Final Destination, no items, as a tourny of pure skill.
A second tournament could have a random stage, random items, random appearance rate, with a set number of opponents (which may or not vary over the course of the tournament). I think first round should be a 7 minute 4 player battle where the 3 losers are eliminated, then a 5 minute 3 player battle, then a 3 stock 1-on-1 for the final... that's 24 contestants by my math... although it wouldn't be particularly fun because 18 of 24 would be knocked out in the first round
I think just a round robin where you get 1 point for every win, then "finals season"... just like any sporting event.
EDIT: Oh, and character/item/stage bans are crap, you'll turn the game into Yugioh

I personally didn't like his fighting style.
And also, on the theme of making a tournament here, would we be able to have the tourneys earler than the DS day times were aranged? Although I apprecate that the vast majority of people here are american, I couldn't play due to the times arranged.
Or would something like seperate tourneys for tose who Can play earlier and those who can't?

Being a Soul Calibur player, I enjoy having a game that is very balanced (most Soul Calibur games are). In the Soul Calibur series, the only reason to ban a character is if the character is not available in all versions of the game. After all, you can't fight against a character if you don't know what his/her moves are!
Smash Bros Melee doesn't have console-exclusive characters OR the multi-platform issue (since it doesn't even have an arcade version), so the character balance is served "as-is." Banning Fox means punishing the players who only play him because they like Starfox, and they may not have a suitable backup character. That's not necessarily their fault, and I really don't think it's worth the bad blood.
Anyway, I hope Brawl is more balanced, but it might not be. That doesn't mean it can't be fun... it just means that people will need to take it less seriously. Play who you like, and don't expect to win everytime, but be happy when you do win.
...If the win list starts to get redundant, then turn the Bo-bomb frequency to "VERY HIGH."
Meh, that sounds boring.
But in the end, I'll take "interesting" over fair any day, for Smash Bros. At one convention tournament, I saw a round where the tournament official turned off all items except for Mr. Saturn, and turned the frequency "VERY HIGH." That was frickin' hilarious.

1) Does it fix the problem with controllers? If you wanted to do a 4-player tournament, you needed 3 controllers in Melee. I hope that problem is fixed.
2) Is it online? It probably isn't, but it may help PureZC's tourneys go by quicker and easier.

Another thing I want to see fixed is Player 1 not having to be a different controller when you enter a tourney.
For example, in Melee, I start a tournament, two people per battle. I'm Player 1. In some battles, I'd have to use Controller 2. Stupid.

Also, he needs to be better than Ness, 'cause I never liked him.
He got introduced before Ness was even confirmed o_O, maybe he'll replace him... ... Nah!

I haven't played Mother 3, so I don't know Lucas's moves. It looks like Ness has a sparring partner, now, though!
