Depending on how the graphics driver crashes, Windows 7 is capable of this as well (I know this, because without that feature, Christina's PC would be blue screening constantly :( )

Windows Vista and newer can do it. Each new O/S got better at it/handled more situations though

Oddly I've never seen a recovery of this sort on 7 or 8. I had Windows 7 BSOD the other day on my work laptop from the gfx crashing.

I tried 10 on the same laptop, but it ran choppy. Windows 8 was ok on it so I pushed through.
Now I just wanna nuke them.

The screen will blink and a message appears in the bottom right corner stating a Total Driver Restart occurred or some such, thus the term TDR Error was born.

I'm actually surprised that you're dissing Micro$oft over forcing automatic updates on Win10. If you aren't going to update to Win10 because of this, that's fine but I doubt all the bitching and moaning will make them change their minds. (And I'm not going to change my mind over this either.)

PROBLEM SOLVED (I hope...)

Windows 10 testers who've complained about mandatory updates in Microsoft's new operating system might have a solution at hand. The tool, available as an optional download, lets you hide or block any update for Windows or a hardware driver.

Note that the article is aimed at Windows 10 Insider testers, not anyone with a retail/upgrade copy of Windows 10. Also note that you'll still likely become ineligible for updates after a set period of time until you install all previously released updates.

I'm probably going to wait for a week or two after the release to make sure nothing horrible has cropped up and then upgrade my Windows 7 PC (assuming it lets me since I haven't downloaded the updates to let me check that yet).

I have no willpower when it comes to updating software that I want. :( Windows 10 is downloading for me right now, so I'll probably install it when I wake up if it's ready by then. I made backups and have a checklist of programs to deal with I've been compiling over several days (turning off auto-start and/or removing them entirely for compatibility or redundancy reasons), so what the hell.

Should have clarified that I want it. I mean I hold off on Skype updates forever and ever with no problems.

Windows 10 is downloading for me right now

Hasn't happened to me yet (probably because I disabled the GWX app... oopsie-doodle?). Today's the big day, and I'm a bit nervous myself. :(

...and that's okay. It's okay to be nervous once in a while, because it's going to be something new to me. Heck, I had to learn how to set up internet access when we moved to the new house, and it turned out to be a snap!

EDIT: I'm confident my Asus Z87-A motherboard will run fine with Win10, but JUST IN CASE, I've downloaded the latest chipset driver from Asus' website. I'll edit the first post with some tidbits and useful info later.

You can create a Windows 10 ISO here: https://www.microsof...nload/windows10

The installer should accept any Windows 7, 8.0 or 8.1 key in addition to Windows 10 keys.

I've got Windows 10 installing now at 25%. It was kind of annoying since I had the setup files downloaded for hours, but it only let me start the install 30 minutes ago. :( But oh well, it's installing now I guess. :P

From what I've been reading on reddit, the direct Microsoft tool has been hit or miss for people doing the upgrade. Make sure you get the correct language if you use that method since you'll end up with an absolutely wonderful "Something happened" error and wasted download time if you don't.

I had an amazing amount of trouble getting the final build installed. The preview never gave me so many issues.

I had to clear out my EFI system reserved partition because it was almost full, and apparently having Windows Update set to manual instead of automatic also causes the install to fail. Stupid.

Anyway I'm up and running again now.

My experience with trying to install Win10 was an absolute nightmare.

The download took forever, the install preparation took even longer than I thought, and what do I get?
A failed installation. All this after forcing Windows Update to download my free upgrade? What a steaming pile of bollocks.
Guess I'm going to have to stick with 8.1 for a while...

I'm a bit surprised that so many people had issues. The only issues I had was at first Windows Update said other shit was updating, but soon after started downloading Windows 10, and that it took about 10 hours for it to download, but I have really shitty internet (last I checked about 1 Mbps per second) so that's a given. I left my PC on over night to install though so it was mostly done by the time I got up.

So I’ve had Windows 10 installed for a few hours at this point. Here’s my initial impressions in a cluttered list:

It’s faster and smoother than Windows 7 overall since there’s less OS overhead going on and there's some optimization. The UI is really smoothly performing. I’ve noticed that Firefox is insanely smooth whereas it was kind of jerking during the smooth scrolling back on my Windows 7. Video playback seems smoother. ZC is about the same as it was before.

I’m undecided on the UI right now. While the basic everyday stuff is familiar enough to anyone that’s used Windows 7, things are definitely really different once you jump in a layer or two because of the organization changes in Windows 8 plus the changes in Windows 10. I haven’t really adjusted to it yet. I also am kind of sad that it doesn’t seem like you can pin applications to the left side of the start menu (the side without tiles). At least I have found no way to do that yet.

I haven’t tried out Cortana yet since I’ve been busy making sure my programs still work and my mic isn’t very convenient to drag out whenever right now.

I tried Microsoft Edge for about 5 minutes, but I noticed that my mouse scroll wheel was not working with it for some reason. I’m not sure what caused that, but I wasn’t really planning to give Edge a serious shot until it gets extension support anyway.

The Movies & TV app worked okay, but I just prefer Daum PotPlayer. PotPlayer also loads faster than the Movies & TV app.

Tried having the Photo Viewer app as the default image viewer for a bit, but switched back to XnView because the PhotoViewer was also a bit slow loading.

Haven’t tried Groove Music at all since I have way too many specific playlists and settings set up in MusicBee to really consider switching music players right now.

I’m pretty disappointed with the local search right now. I use ZCM to launch ZC Quests directly, so something I’d gotten into doing with Everything (a free search indexing program) was searching for a quest file and running it directly. Unfortunately, Windows built in search is still terrible at finding files on a computer and I can’t find over half of the quest names I type in despite adding those folders to the search index. It can’t find a whole lot of my “portable” programs that are sitting in another indexed directory either. It also seems to prioritize online results and while there is an option to turn online results off entirely, I’m still just kind of frustrated at how this isn’t working since I wanted to give it a fair shot and consider ditching Everything (the program). :(

There’s things like OneDrive that I can’t actually try until I change my local account to a Microsoft account. I’m on the fence on whether I want to do that or not. :(

I haven’t tried grabbing apps from the store yet. I don’t know if I even can because of the above thing.

Really loving the virtual desktop feature. I am pretty amazed at how smooth it is. My one wish is that there were keyboard shortcuts to move windows between virtual desktops, but I haven't found such a shortcut yet.

I was finally able to mostly ditch libraries (the folder groups like documents, pictures, videos, etc). I can see the appeal in having them, but I just prefer having the single folders. There is an option to turn the view of them back on in Explorer if you really want them. I dunno if that was new to 8 or 10, but thank you very much for giving the option regardless.

Did I mention I love the performance I'm getting?

...

Overall, I guess my experience so far has been pretty great with the things that I had already in Windows 7. Once I got things set up, I'm at a point where I can continue my normal workflow with very little interruption or change. The improved performance is also a big deal for me. But I'm still mixed on everything else and I do want to try out more of the new stuff. I'll have to give it a few weeks. The search thing has been my only major disappointment so far since it was one of the hyped up features. I'll probably be sticking with Windows 10 though and I'm looking forward to seeing how it pans out.

Sorry for not doing the more specific quote with notifications, but this popped up while I was typing that big long post.

The Windows Update release is being done in waves. Even if you force the files to download (which I did), the finishing touches (mainly the boot.wim or whatever) have to be downloaded as a separate thing. I had at least 6-7 install fails in my Windows Update log before it finally let me do it almost 12 hours after I'd gotten the files. It's still crappy, of course.

If you want to skip that hassle, go for the Windows ISO link that was thrown out earlier. Just be sure to get the correct version and language for your system.

Before upgrading to Windows 10, make sure you have a user account (Local Account) that is NOT associated with a Microsoft account, create one if you don't have one. This is because Windows 10 requires an online connection to authenticate User Accounts associated with a Microsoft Account and wouldn't you know it? The Windows 10 upgrade can REMOVE your Network Card drivers!

More details here: https://social.techn...win10itprosetup

I've downgraded back to 8.1 and will wait for Microsoft to sort themselves out.
