Fire/Water
Water/Grass
Grass/Fire
Have we ever had anything with these particular combinations before?

Kurt, I don't think so. However, there was a Bug/Fire in Generation 5.

I like the idea of having the initial Fire/Water/Grass choice, and then whichever one you choose will evolve and eventually gain the type of one of the remaining two. We'd end up with...
Fire/Water
Water/Grass
Grass/Fire
I dunno, I feel like that cheapens the type-advantages of the other starters against them, personally.

I dunno, I still think it presents a better opportunity to find a teammate that can defeat your rival's choice, rather than just let your starter tank everything. That, or find more strategic ways to have your starter overcome its weakness, such as a fire starter learning Thunderpunch. Giving them the second type that's balanced against the other takes away the fun of strategizing against your rival. Now maybe if the starters were Fire/Psychic, Grass/Fighting, and Water/Dark, it could be more interesting, since the type advantages are strong in both slots. But we shall see.
If you're going to use the "takes the fun out" thing, it all boils down to the players choices. I mean, if you're going to use your starter in the rival battle and that happens, you choose to do so. Some of us don't even use our starter anymore, once we get other Pokemon on the team. AKA Me and Lanturn. Lanturn always becomes my primary Pokemon, and if I can get a Chinchou through fishing on here midway through the game, then it'll no doubt happen again. Epic raping Lanturn with:
Ability: Volt Absorb
Moves: Earthquake, Thunderbolt, Surf, Ice Beam.

Wow... We're already talking about Gen VI here?! Dang! What happened to Gen V? Whatever...
So, I don't think X and Y are completely random. In the Japanese logo, there is a double helix which means, (GASP!) these games are based on DNA and gene splicing! I'm guessing that they decided to continue the thing in Black and White 2 where you can splice the genes of Kyurem to change its form. They MIGHT have more Pokemon you can do this with. Who knows?
The starters... Meh... It's not that I hate them. But their designs just don't appeal to me. I'd have to see where their evolutions go. I call that the starters will be: Grass/Dark, Water/Fighting, and Fire/Psychic. I would punch GameFreak in the face if they somehow made Fennekin into a Fire/Fighting pokemon. (You can't punch a company, but I could, I would).
The graphics don't look so bad. I'm sure if they brushed it up a bit, it would look decent.
I don't have a problem with it being on the 3DS. In fact, I'm glad they ditched the 2DS so we can finally move on in technology.
I'm still looking out for Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald Remake. It'll probably be a sudden suprise in March/April/May. I'd be laughing my face off if they announced on April 1!
