No. Go online and watch the actual series. Just trust me on this one.

Here, let me make my well-rehearsed pitch.

So you've probably got that mental association of My Little Pony = a mind numbing show for five year old girls about a bunch of beautiful talking ponies who want to have a tea party, or a picnic, and for some extraneous and inconsequential reason, they can't. I don't blame you for thinking that. For about 23 years, it was the truth. But now, imagine for a second that one of the most prestigious and respected studios in all of American Cartoons, comparable to, say, the Gainax or Sunrise Studios of western animation, saw My Little Pony and said "hey...this series really kind of sucks. Let's see if we can make it AMAZING." So they talk to Hasbro and get permission and all that fun stuff, and they make a 26-episode trial season. Just picture this new series having everything you could want out of a TV series and then some. Quality character designs and believable character personalities, well-developed plot, consistency, well-choreographed fight scenes - frick - fight scenes in general, quality dialogue, quality art and animation, and even though they still have parties, replace the tea with barbecue and rave music. And granted, the barbecue is still hay, but the intention is there, and it adds to the comic relief.

Picture this: would you watch it?

Hence, you have My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, from the studios that brought us Dexter's Laboratory and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

This is probably the best description I've ever heard anybody say for MLP. You definitely know how to sell the idea to people. Well said. icon_wink.gif

Honestly, I was skeptical to watch this at first. But, after watching the first episode, I couldn't help but watch more (I started watching way before this thread was made, just if you were wondering). So yeah, all I can say is at least have an open mind and watch it. It's an extremely well done and addicting show to watch. It's worth your time and then some. icon_wink.gif

at the beginning I could not believe I was watching MLP: FIM.
before, I always thought: why was everywhere? Why? why there so many fans of this cartoon girls? "
in knowyourmeme this for second place in popularity, after, cosplay pony appeared.

I decided to read the review of knowyourmeme, said the program was even fun for all ages, which was not the same as was previously

Then I DECIDED ( I was like: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!) to watch at least 2 episodes, but did not know that was a trap!
I started watching and watching.... it remembers me when I saw cartoons (90´style)

Now every day I say to himself: HOW CAN BE THIS CHILDREN CARTOON SO ENTERTAINING??!

Cardcaptor Sakura was by CLAMP, and was therefore AMAZING, doesn't matter if it's shojo or not. And my dad watches Sailor Moon, so I think you're in the clear.

As for a hobby, why not take up papercraft? I have some patterns you can use that would be very situation-appropriate (pretty sure JoshSim has them, too).

And with the gif, I remember when that happened. That episode was amazing.

I don't like everything by CLAMP, but I'd venture to say I like everything post-Cardcaptor, so I guess that's a good point.

Heh. Assuming he's over 40, your dad is a rare breed.

Papercraft... hmmmmm. I dunno, maybe. I used to assemble paper castle models that came in cut-out books. If I did it, I'd probably jump straight to polygon papercraft. Last convention, I met a girl in a Link costume who made her life-sized Hylian Shield prop entirely out of papercraft.

Psshht. And you counted the post total of every member in this thread just so you could say that, didn't you?

I may not have seen MLP yet, but I am no stranger the the phenomenon of guys over 16 watching shows for little girls. That's been going on in America for at least 15 years now. Thank you, anime.

Hell, when I was a little kid my sister and I watched Care Bears. That's basically like My Little Pony but aimed at both genders (albeit still for kids under 5).

I'll watch MLP:FSiM, once I figure out who to watch it with.

Also, if you enjoy the concept of a show targeted at little kids that is on enormous amounts of crack, I recommend watching Hale + Guu.

Clover was good, and that was the year before Cardcaptor.

Polygons are actually more difficult; the template papercrafts are way easier. Just don't make the same amateur mistake I made: DON'T USE TAPE! USE GLUE! TAPE IS EVIL!

Come on, watch it. It's all on YouTube, in glorious HD! Just hide the browser tab if anyone walks by. You'll never even have to mention it to anyone, ever.

One little taste couldn't hurt, could it? Maybe... a whole episode? Maybe even a couple? If you want, it can be our secret, just between you, me and Pinkie Pie over here.

You can watch it with me. I'll be there, in spirit, guiding you on your pony-awakening journey.

Before you know it, you know who Derpy Hooves is, phrases like everypony no longer sound ridiculous and you're desperately trying to convince yourself that, no, you don't really want to buy the toys.

also i somehow read your abbreviation as My Little Pony: FriendSim is Magic

Hmmm, I'll keep that title in mind.
Also, if you liked Cardcaptor Sakura, watch Angelic Layer. Assuming you haven't already. Which you may very well have.

Heh. The perfect age to enjoy pretty pretty ponies. Even if not everybody has realized it.

Polygons are actually more difficult; the template papercrafts are way easier. Just don't make the same amateur mistake I made: DON'T USE TAPE! USE GLUE! TAPE IS EVIL!
But I'm no stranger to paper models. I want a challenge! icon_wink.gif And yes, I used tacky glue for my paper model castles. One of them was a to-scale replica of a real (and rather large) castle that still exists.

Watch it with a life-size Fluttershy plushie. That's what I did.

...SO. Tonight my sister was in an unhappy mood, so she decided to hell with it, she was going to watch some My Little Pony. Perhaps because I had mentioned this thread, she had the good sense to invite me to join her.

It wasn't half bad. The episode we saw, however, was perhaps a little too similar to the original. The entirety of the conflict was "ponies want to be friends and/or have a party; stuff gets in the way." I kept saying that I suspected it would have been better if we had watched episode 1, but that wasn't available on Comcast, and she didn't want to resort to the internet. I'm not sure how much "meat" there is to the "main story," if there is one, but we'll get back to it eventually.

For the record, it was the episode where Rainbow Dash befriends Pinkie Pie, but then gets pulled into a lesbian romance competing friendship with a biker chick headstrong griffin.

So anyway... very nice animation, and I'll watch more, but I don't think we've really seen the best of the show yet. Props on the theme song remix, though. Plus, I'm happy that the animated versions of the ponies no longer LOOK like they're made out of plastic and rubber.

Oh, you watched episode 5? Jeez, that's pretty much THE WORST EPISODE, especially to start with. Good news is, that griffin doesn't appear again, ever.

But yeah, you have just seen the worst episode in the series thus far. It can only get better. And yes, you should start from the beginning, because the series starts with a two-part episode.

Well then. I will give my sister the good news, and then berate her for her choice of episode. icon_wink.gif

I will try to convince her to watch episode 1 and 2 on my computer rather than on her snail disguised as a laptop.

Episode 9, which is about racism, is one of my favorite episodes... You should totally watch it sometime if nothing else. :B More or less for what happens to Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy, though.

Hmmm. Before future episodes, can you help me confirm or deny one of my suspicions?...

I suspect that the first couple of episodes work to set the scene for how everything fits together, but then after that, the order in which the episodes are watched is not of utmost importance.

Is this the case? Or is there some kind of overarching story which actually relies on the order to some degree?... If there is, I'll actually be kinda impressed, given the subject matter. icon_razz.gif

I wouldn't say that it's that way entirely, as in, it doesn't have an overarching story from what I've seen so far... But there's definitely some continuity here and there. For example, episode 9 introduces a few characters that would make episodes after it more confusing had you not watched it first.

There's several episodes throughout the season which build up to the finale (the Gala) that should be viewed before it, in particular The Ticket Master and Suited for Success. There's also characters throughout the season that reappear after their introduction - Zecora from Bridle Gossip briefly appears in Swarm of the Century and if I remember correctly is mentioned in Stare Master, though it isn't important enough that you must view Bridle Gossip first. On the other hand, Call of the Cutie should probably be viewed before the rest of the Cutie Mark Crusader episodes (which are Stare Master, The Show Stoppers and The Cutie Mark Chronicles). There's other, more subtle nods to continuity which are easy to miss and don't really matter to first time viewers.

As for what episode you should watch next? Party of One. It's currently my favorite episode. If you aren't laughing for the entire second half of it then you need to work on your magic and/or friendship. You might also consider Bridle Gossip, which I think is generally considered the best episode for introducing people to the series. There's also the first episode, which is a two-parter and sets up the characters and setting really well (and explains why Twilight is writing all these friendship reports). If you want an episode with the conflict being something other than WE NEED MORE FRIENDSHIP - but really why would you - there's several, namely Dragonshy, Swarm of the Century, A Dog and Pony Show and of course the first two episodes.

But seriously. Party of One. In 720p. Go get your sister.

(I assume no one cares about me directly linking this - Hasbro couldn't care less about the episodes being on YouTube)

it's so weird, I watched that episode, and it seemed like I already knew the lines. Whats going on with me!!!?

anyway, it seems like a pretty good show, I mean, it's made for young children so I don't really relate to it, but the animation is beautiful and the characters are charming.

I think I could like this show.

Also, it seems that the only boy in the whole show is a slave...I mean, haven't seen all the episodes, but didn't see any other boy characters in that episode.
