Holy crap... that is insanely bizarre. I wish I had seen this earlier :P

Either way, have a sneak peak at Rolling Ridge:

There's more to come.

7.8/10 too much water.

I like the accuracy. I would say add another group of bushes somewhere to the left, and you're good to go.

Am I the only one who sees this map moving like some sort of optical illusion?

Nope, I've got it too.

I think it's the way those cliffs seem to fade down into a black pit, right at the edge before the ground spreads out.

That cliff shading makes it look like they're rising up, but the darker color of the rocks relative to the ground makes them look like they're sinking down.

Kurt91, hot damn, Hyrule field is full of trees. I would cut back on the trees and maybe replace the solid with rock, or even nothing itself to allow more breathing room.

Though, oddly enough, trees are the main reason we're breathing in the first place :P

The first two main areas, Southern Shores and Hyrule Field, for the revised version of my "Balance of Power" quest. I may not be able to finish all of the area revisions in time for the expo, but I have a back-up copy of a "perfected" version of my previous demo, just in case I can't finish this one.

Now, I always have trouble with field areas, never being able to figure out how to fill them up so that they aren't empty and featureless, while still keeping the "open fields" feel. Since I have so much trouble, I decided to cheat a bit.

First, I got a hold of a map of the overworld from Minish Cap, and got rid of everything except Hyrule Field and Castle Town. I moved the town to the north, swapping it with the upper area of the field, to match the layout of my quest. I then started smashing areas together until it fit the general shape that I needed, and scribbled a few extra paths cut through the trees so that everything was still connected in a way that made sense.

Next, I started hacking the map into pieces, incredibly roughly. I stuck these pieces on a grid, to represent the individual screens that I was going to make. These hacked up pieces would give me the general idea of what to place on each screen and which sides of the screen were open to travel. I started copying the designs into my map, with the one condition that I tried to avoid straight plateaus when possible, and had cliff walls slant themselves back into the ground for more of a steppe architecture, to keep it feeling open instead of a maze of valleys and plateaus. After cleaning things up a bit between screens, I ended up with the finished map.

Now, I say "finished", but I still need to pick places to put secrets and caves, and block off some excess areas to keep progression easier on the player, so they don't wander off for miles in the entire wrong direction. You'll notice some missing bridges and such for that reason. Still, it looks fairly nice, and I can use it for connecting areas together without it feeling strictly like a hub area, so I'm really happy with it. (I also noticed a few shortcomings in my tileset, such as trees being unable to be placed directly to the left or right of water. I may want to look into fixing that.)

Maybe add another layer of dirt? The Gameboy Zelda dirt perhaps, since you have added Gameboy Zelda grass. The dirt sections look rather bland compared to the rest. Otherwise, great map. I picked up on the Minish Cap inspiration before seeing you actually did take inspiration. Good stuff.

What dirt tiles are you talking about? I'm pretty sure that I've already used every type there is. I've got the beach sand, fine soil, and coarse rocky dirt. Is there another one that I'm missing? I'd love it if there is, I don't like how much of my beach area looks the same as the field area above it. I'd like a bit more of a visual difference.

You only notice the sheer thickness of the trees in a zoomed out map. Otherwise, it's only one or two tiles in from the edge, mainly because I hate how the bottom half of the bottom row can't be seen, and I don't like having only half-tiles seen on-screen where everything else has full tiles. I'm using Moscowmodder's LttP Map script, and removing the spacebar map entirely, so you'll only see one screen at a time, which helps hide the trees a lot.

EDIT: Okay, this is driving me nuts. How do I manually label a quote with the original person's name?

I was thinking doing dirt something like this? There are two types of dirt here, perhaps you can work with this?

I think this is kinda a side effect of Z1's screen format. Unfortunately, most field areas end up looking more like a forest or mountain when zoomed out. That, or they're horribly open and plain.

Dredged up from a nearly forgotten file that was created on my old computer comes this map of an unfinished quest from 2006.

q0Gksv8.png

This quest has no name, only two dungeons that have had their shapes outlined and nothing else and a lot of ideas that would now be possible in a 2.5 quest. I ran out of motivation when I realized that certain things simply couldn't be done within the limitations of the program; then I started thinking about what I might be able to do and that was when I began working on Link's Awakening (Zelda Classic Edition).

Will I ever go back to this quest? Maybe, although I probably won't use the same tileset. I'd more than likely use what there was of the overworld design if anything. And I'd definitely need a name for it.

Well I can say you've definitely improved with your overworld design over the years so that's always a good plus :P

But yeah, if you do ever pick this up again, I would recommend a whole overworld make over, it would look great.

What you're not seeing in that map is the areas that are different palettes. I had an icy area, and a fiery area and a dark forest and plans for several more. There are a few more partially completed screens than are shown, but I cropped them out.

In the unlikely event that I ever decided to work on this again, I'm pretty sure that nothing would stay the same.

Ah fair enough. It would still look cool to see this remade though :P

Ooo this is pretty well made. I assume that the mountains on the left side aren't finished yet, so I won't go into talking about that. Other than that though, I definitely like how it's coming along so far. Looking forward to seeing this finished!

Probably finish off the mountains on the left side so that it doesn't look like they're just floating in the air since it looks very weird. Other than that, I haven't got any other suggestions.

As Eddy said, finish up the mountains, and add solid colour clouds down there.
