Not with no shield...I don't know what you're talking about. One hit and I'm out. Although they can be easy to dodge at TIMES, it's not easy every time.

I never used the shield in the game. I forgot about it. :P So my post still stands. Once you get used to his attack pattern, it's all about dodging.

I've finally got this game! Not sure if I'll wait to play it when my friend is online so I can discuss it with them as I play it (They've already beaten it), or if I'll play it now.

Got the game at last, beat the Eastern Palace with only one hour of gameplay, looking forward to seeing how this is going to end up.

So, got the game for Christmas. I beat the three Light World dungeons, and then got every squid thingy that I can without Dark World access, and upgraded my bow, fire rod, and ice rod, and have one more update I can use although I'm saving it for something else right now. And... so far, it's... eh. Better than Minish Cap, but that doesn't say much. Still below the original and the Oracles, in my opinion. The reused overworld feels lazy, the music is bland, and the dungeons, while they have great puzzles, are kinda poorly designed when viewed as a whole. And just like I thought, the item rental system is stupid beyond repair. The second it opened, I was able to rent every single item (partially because the game just rupees out like mad), and I feel like it's really breaking the flow so far. I would have liked to enter the Lake Hylia dungeon, see the fans, figure out what kind of item I needed, then found it and gotten surprised when it wasn't at all the item I was expecting. Instead, I just rented it from a shop. And on that note, the tornado rod is a really terrible item. And Ravio is horrible. Really horrible. I just want to slice his freaking bunny head clean off he's that bad.

So basically it's not bad, but it's not really good either. It's just kinda... meh.

I beat the first dungeon after renting every single item possible right from the start because... they're incredibly cheap o_O

So yeah, a bit disappointed in the rental shop aspect so far as I have essentially everything you'd have had to earn in any other Zelda game (Except Zelda 2) before even doing a single major dungeon. It would've been way better if there was a limit to how many items you could rent at any one time (like at most rent 4 or 6 items, purchased items don't contribute towards the limit) or higher prices to make it less stupid (It seems to be aimed at people who have never played this kind of game before and aren't willing to explore).

Yeah, agreed. I still would've preferred the items being in the dungeons and just have them allow you to do them in any order if they have to push this non-linear thing.

Consider upgrading the Hammer too once you get the option. The Nice Hammer is stronger than even the highest level Sword. It also has massive shockwaves that can stun entire groups of enemies with. You can tell this game will be hard, right?  The Tornado Rod won't be seeing much use, so you can pretty much forget about it for now. It's dungeon is over, so it becomes junk you just carry around with you. It may have a use or two on the overworld to get rupees or a HCP, but beyond that you won't need it.

Anyhow, I agree with what you're saying. I felt this game was mediocre myself. Seems like I'm one of the few that feel that way still.

I know what you both mean, and I'd be lying if didn't feel like that about the rental shop myself.

However, it's worth noting that by renting all the items at once, you've made the pentalty for dying much steeper. Also, while rentals are cheap, purchases are not, upgrades require a significant effort to get all of, and there are some other items hidden in all the dungeons once you reach Lorule. So, for me, I never really felt such a big lack as far as exploring and discovering new things. I think getting the upgrades filled a gap in this respect and made me feel like I was getting new items, too.

Penalty for dying? You mean you can die in this game? I've already challenged myself to not use any bottles or grab the upgraded tunics, but it's still just so easy. The bosses especially. That Yuga fight in Eastern Palace... after fighting Ghirahim in SS, I was expecting another super challenging first battle with the villain, and then I didn't even see him attack because I killed him so fast. And buying the items takes a lot of money, yes, but the game just throws the stuff at you. I want to buy an item, I can go exploring for 10 minutes and come back with 800 rupees. It's a bit ridiculous. The upgrades certainly do fuel exploration, but they also seem incredibly broken. And I'd probably be doing the squid hunting thing even without the item upgrades as a result; this is the guy who stopped progressing the main story in AC3 for a few days to collect 100 random feathers to unlock a new outfit. I don't need a whole lot of motivation to explore. :P And while I do like the exploration... I wish the overworld weren't just LttP's. Part of the charm of Zelda games is seeing what this area just over the horizon looks like, and here, I know exactly what it looks like, and the only thing I'm uncertain about is which rock I'm gonna have to lift to find a squid underneath.

As soon as I posted that, I KNEW someone was going to say this. :P  Yeah, I didn't have much trouble either. A little higher difficulty might have been nicer - especially in the way the enemies acted. It was much too easy to time sword slashes against even the most damaging enemies to stun them into not doing a thing. And the items were very effective against them, too. There are few flaws that people bring up that I don't agree with. I guess as a whole they just don't bother me as much.

I've yet to die in this game still. Even with Hero Mode's 4x damage I haven't died.

Now on the otherhand, fighting enemies on hills, that is difficult. It doesn't seem you can hit enemies if you're on a hill whether you're higher or lower than them..

I dislike that if you stand next to a bush that is next to a bush and you slash at the bush next to you, you won't also cut the furthest bush as well. However if you perform a second sword attack without moving, you will! Same applies with grass and I believe enemies, your swords reach magically diminishes when line of sight is diminished and it makes things awkward/annoying. You won't notice it much with the Master Sword so long as you're at full health.

Afaik the only exception to this is the Spin Slash.

And yeah the boss encounter in Eastern Palace was a complete joke, it's like Phantom Ganon except with super obvious cues for when and where to attack. It would've maybe worked a lot better if the arena was large enough that you couldn't see most of it at any one moment and if the boss (typically) moved between more then 2 places.
