Actually, they did this with Roy to promote the new FE game in America.
*reads up on that*
...Actually, your story checks out. Roy appeared in Melee (JP 2001) before his game was released (JP 2002). However, Melee was released before the Japanese release of Fire Emblem: The Sealed Sword, as well as the American. If it had been released after the Japanese FE:TSS release, but before the American, I would have argued that the American promotion was an afterthought (or a "bonus" for marketing).

Young Link was PIMPIN'. SERIOUSLY. I loved him because he had all the versatility of Link, but in an easy to carry form. I don't know if WW Link would fit in with the rest of the croud, though... then again, they DID put Mr. Game & Watch in Melee. I guess we'll just have to wait for the game or another update to find out.
Originally thought you said "rest of the crud."

"Fit in?" Since when was "fitting in" any kind of priority of Smash Bros.?

The entire game is based on unlikely crossovers. If all were right in the world of Smash Bros., Ganondorf wouldn't be taking on Pikachu.

Well... It's TP Link in brawl, but he's still using the SSBM mechanics, which means his style is screwed.
Melee's mechanics were still different from Ocarina of Time, you know. Downward Thrust is from Zelda 2. In short, what I'm saying is that these are all minor concerns.
Moonwhisper did point out that strangely, TP Link uses the OoT-design Master Sword. Still, there's no way you'd know that without looking at the concept art (or an extreme zoom), and in any case it might be updated later.
Also, Link's moves have in fact been updated for TP items. Mainly the Gale Boomerang, which now drags the enemy towards him somewhat. The clawshot now auto-aims, but that's more of an engine upgrade than it is a TP update. I'm hoping that the screenshot comment on Smashbros.com about Link's bow being "so fast" means that they're changing the bow mechanics, too.

Still, OoT Young Link is cuuuuuuuuuute...

ERR I MEAN awesome. I like that style. If they want a WW Link in the game, create a different one, I say.
TWO Young Links?
Or do you want WW Link to be different from Young Link? If so, I think that's appropriate. However, they'll probably still call him "Young Link." Smash Bros. usually goes for simpler names when possible. After all, in Melee, regular Link wasn't "Adult Link" or "Ocarina of Time Link," he was just "Link."
I wasn't crazy about Young Link's design in OoT, so my fondness for him in Melee was due mostly to his fighting skillz.
