I'd rather go through puns than wait another month, but that's just me. :Y

I don't think the Master Sword just rusted away as there's chips in the sword, almost looking like it's been badly damaged through physical force than nature/time/magic. Though with all the Hylia references perhaps it is something to do with Hylia/Zelda and maybe this is it but the implications of physical damage to the blade suggest otherwise. It could be possible that Link's possible defeat is connected with the Master Sword be it through spiritual connection or actually failing a fierce battle.

Maybe Calamity Ganon is so dangerous it personally eroded the Master Sword during its rampage? That'd be terrifying and a catch most players wouldn't expect. But than that raises the question: How to beat him. That could actually be a good premise if done right. It's kind of fun to speculate, but I hope the end product has a more mind blowing explanation.

It could be kind of interesting if the game's plot trinkets weren't some mystical collection of things (medallions, essences, etc.), but just various special materials that you need, and the end result is literally re-forging the Master Sword. You have some blacksmith who is skilled enough to do it, but has no idea what materials are needed for the job, and each dungeon that you clear reveals one of the metals needed. It could even tie into the breakable weapons idea, where imperfect alloys or incomplete alloys make increasingly durable weapons, so you can constantly feel the progress that you're making, but you won't make the perfect unbreakable sword until you have all of them.

Isn't this game going to have a reduced number of dungeons, like four or so? Each material you reveal could add a different trait. One adds more of a lightweight quality, so you can swing weapons that incorporate it somewhat faster, while another one is heavier but more durable. Combining the two will give you the durability of the heaver metal, with the increased speed and dexterity from the lighter metal. Maybe one particular metal takes sharpening better than the others, so using it will give you a sharper weapon that deals more damage, but since you'd be limited to blending a certain number of metals together, you have to choose between a more durable + sharper weapon, a sharper + faster weapon, or a weaker but faster and more durable weapon. And that's all from just three potential metals. Being able to do any dungeon in order would reveal the four different possible traits in potentially any combination.

...You know what? if BotW doesn't go with this idea, I'm totally using it for my own game.

The Master Sword is lost forever, so they have to forge a new weapon to beat Ganon: A Trident, with which they destroy the beast and keep his essence in ala Demise. Only, this Trident wasn't blessed enough to erode away the remnants of Ganon, and instead housed them, so they sealed it away.

Therefore this game is a prequel to Four Swords Adventures. :tard:

Clearly the rusted Master Sword is one of the fakes seen in LttP, which are cheaply made and easily damaged :P

Just curious, where'd you see that? I would be a bit surprised if that was all, but considering there are tons of shrines, and "dungeon environments" I guess it is feasible. The rest of your post is a pretty good idea too.

One of the E3 videos shows Link picking up a fake master sword near the temple of time :P

The GameXplain analysis was the only place I'd heard about the rumor of there only being four dungeons. I haven't seen any other sources on the subject so I don't know if they have a shred of legitimacy. I hope they're pretty large then, to upset the ridiculous number of shrines. That or I hope the later shrines get really good to help make up for the low dungeon count.

Regardless, I'll probably be too busy exploring all that open world anyway.

I can see some of the shrines being long, if not at least very elaborate. That one with the big wheel that you have to scale up the inside of by stopping time looks pretty interesting. I can see them also making some of them play out more like traditional dungeons.

I'd take my chances with the rusty master sword. I'll give Ganon rust poisoning. That shit'll mess you right up.

He got a Tetanus shot during last year's E3, he should be good until after the NeXt console comes out.

Here's a discussion looking into some of the more popular speculations, which is neat, but the portion I want to draw specific attention to is from 5:23-7:35. Here, he discusses one he came up with himself: The game depicts the Imprisoning War. With some pretty compelling evidence too. Granted, I think he says it takes place after the Imprisoning War, but the whole thing seems like the Imprisoning War to me. That would unfortunately mean the game would end with another sealing, but I can certainly see it being possible based on the evidence.

But there was no hero involved in the IW, right?

To be fair, all they said was they searched for a hero who could wield the sword, but the situation was urgent. Maybe that's why the guy believes it takes place after the Imprisoning War? This is just perhaps the final aftermath, based on his own beliefs.

Dunno, he also theorizes that the old man is a sage, and we know he meets Link. And Link witnesses the dark cloud emerging IIRC.

I do like the idea as an explanation of people disappearing tho.

EDIT: Interestingly, Twilight Princess could also be read as people disappearing in a dark cloud
