I have one thats partially GM compliant, I have to check it though, to make sure all the sounds are functioning. the Base Soundfont is SynthGMs which comes with Synthfont. I figured it'd be a great base since its lower quality. In any case, I can't guarantee that such a soundfont will work great as a GUS Patch, though, and then you'd have to e-mail the contributers to get permission(I haven't, and didn't plan on it)

Scratch that, I don't have it anymore. icon_doh.gif

I got excited about the Bank Select midi control event that I tried to make it work, and had an entirely different approach to doing what I wanted to do that I dropped what I had.

edit: I think I got a breakthrough on my hands. Lets see if I can set this up in timidity and then I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Edit2: GUYS I DID IT!

I finally figured out how to do a Bank Select. after nearly 24 hours of information hunting my quest has come to an end. What does this mean?

I could, in theory, have 16256 different INSTRUMENTS TO SELECT FROM(16000 more instruments than standard GS/GM). I'm actually very excited about this!

With that, I'll be enjoying my newfound midi mastery! icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif

So, for the record, then, some of you people with standard midi have different sound banks and probably don't know about it.

Here's a bit of information

I have to do this in two different programs before I can make it work, but its worth it.

in Anvil Studio, I have to go to Midi Events, and insert the following code as a system exclusive event: F0 41 10 42 12 40 00 7F 00 41 F7

Then I open up synthfont(because Anvil blocks out the bank select) and select the bank, and then program.

Finally I save the Midi and then I play it in my audio player(currently Winamp) and viola, it switches to a different soundbank for that channel. Its pretty amazing. I feel like I accomplished something noteworthy.

Example 5 is up. The only thing that I changed to this MIDI is that the intro is slower and in the Time Chorus instrument. The Time Chorus instrument is Bank 1 Program 53. Same as Synth Voice on Bank 0. If you listen closely, you'll hear the Synth Voice instrument later, proving that I have this figured out. icon_biggrin.gif

The final example will be K.K. Slider doing Saria's Song. icon_razz.gif

I think I'm starting a revolution... icon_blink.gif

Dude... Sounds like you've done a lot! Utter awesome! icon_biggrin.gif

I was wondering, how would I change my midi-driver on a 2000? I've searched a little and can't seem to find anything.

Look up Timidity++. Its a soundfont player. Its a MIDI driver. Its what I'm using right now, and as far as I can tell, it works for as far back as Windows 98, and up to Vista(not sure about 7, yet) icon_wink.gif

If you want instructions on how to set up Timidity so that it uses the seperate sound banks, please don't hesitate to ask. I'd like to make my set-up a standard here for extended MIDI. How does AZCMS sound? Alestance's Zelda Classic MIDI Setup icon_razz.gif

If you need instructions on how to make MIDIs using my extended set-up, I can help you with that too.

Still, it'd be great to have a GM-compatible one, even if it meant leaving out a few sounds. Might even make for a better patches.dat for the Linux builds.
I've tried both the Unison soundfont suggested in the ZC Assistance Thread and Fluid GM for patches.dat, and they both sound absolutely terrible, so I'm pretty sure the problem there is with Allegro's midi drivers.

I don't suppose there's any way to have ZC output to an ALSA sequencer port, is there? Because I have Timidity set up to run in daemon mode for that, and it sounds just fine.

As far as I know, no there isn't. Koopa had tried to help with that once, and the only place we got is how the sound is set up now.

I, too, had Fluid for ZC once on my linux machine, and it sounded great. There must have been a change with how it was handled after I started experimenting with ZC Linux again, because it sounded like crap when I tried it again.

Its really lame, I suppose.

Hey guys, I'm just gonna post a link here.

Set 2

Tell me, do they sound like MIDIs to you? icon_wink.gif

Also, yes, the Sonic 3 "woos" and "Come-on!" are part of the drum kit.

The Sonic songs sound great. The NES ones aren't bad, but they could definitely be better The percussion in particular just doesn't sound right, and the lowest notes in Stone Tower just sound like a low clarinet.

the NES sounds aren't great, I know. If nothing else, its only a temporary place-holder. I USED to have a GREAT NES soundfont... with Konami type drums and everything, however... That's no longer available.

I love that Stone Tower one. My only complaint with it is that the instrument that plays the background notes "A-E-A-E-A-E-F; A-E-A-E-A-E-D" is nearly impossible to hear.

I think its because I had it's volume lowered when I used that MIDI for the stone tower theme from my first set of examples and I was being lazy this time around. icon_razz.gif
