I don't know why everyone is so upset at the existence of clones. I highly doubt that the clones are occupying the hypothetical slot of another unique character. From a development standpoint, clones are easy and appease fans of the series the clone is from. They just model swap and tweak some numbers, maybe re-texture some projectiles. This allows for simple additions to the game. Unique characters take a whole lot more work to make from the ground up. The mindset of clones occupying roster slots seems silly when it's highly likely the number of unique characters would be the same regardless of their inclusion due to the development effort put into them. Given that Sakurai's Kotaku interview earlier in the year said Lucina was a costume swap of Marth and given her promotion to unique character, it's safe to reason that most/all of the clones that have a unique character slot are similar situations. This mentality also assumes that there's a limited number of final roster slots and there seems to be a lot of evidence to the contrary regarding this.
Yeah... To be honest, it bothers me when people say they're disappointed with the game (which I've been seeing a lot of lately), especially regarding stuff like clones. Disappointed with what, that Sakurai and his team are working their asses off to give you this game, and somehow having a couple clones fill some slots is being lazy? That they don't know the exact inner workings of every single person's wants and know how to perfectly work with all of that to make the penultimate game? Like, not even trying to go into fangirl mode or kiss everywhere he steps, but just imagine how much time they've spent doing everything over the past few years. We have a roster of what, 50+ characters, all from the first 3 games and then a shitton of newcomers including but not limited to Mega Man, Palutena, Rosalina, Greninja, Villager, Robin, and more. And that's somehow not good enough? If there was a Smash Bros. that was going to include every character that everyone wanted and it was perfectly balanced and catered to everyone's whims, it would never leave development.
I mean, there's nothing wrong with being like, "Well, I wish x character or y stage was in this..." because we're all thinking like that. I want Isaac to be playable and if he isn't, I'll be a little disappointed that he wasn't picked. But the difference is just y'know, not acting like a kid who's bitter that his mom didn't get them one thing they put on their Christmas list but still got them a bunch of neat stuff anyway. Or crapping gold and still complaining that you don't piss diamonds instead (no, I don't care how much that would hurt, it's the best analogy).

Scootaloo, I agree so much. He's doing the best he possibly can to make an awesome game. That's Sakurai's job! I love every smash roster and I'm sure this game will be no different.

The problem to me with clones is they're advertised to be new characters when they essentially aren't. A lot of them are unneeded and could easily be added as an alternate costume instead.. Then there are other characters who could easily be clones and people would love the game if they were added in, yet get ignored. Roy, Mewtwo and Pichu fans would love to have them in even as alts to Marth, Lucario and Pikachu, yet we won't be seeing that and instead get stuff like Dark Pit and Dr. Mario who really are unneeded that very few have asked for.
While I agree Sakurai and his team are working hard, they miss big opportunities to make the game go from good to amazing. I mean considering his popularity, wouldn't Ridley be a huge addition and make a lot of people want the game more? He's been asked for since the original SSB to be playable I believe. There are many other characters like him too.
And wouldn't adding Mewtwo help with the people who were heartbroken he was left out in Brawl? Why do we have to remove ANY characters from the older games? If models already exist from Melee and Brawl, shouldn't those be a shoe-in to make it back than making an SSB model from scratch?
Here's my opinion on clones, and I'm pretty sure it's already been stated in this thread by somebody else. Clones aren't exact copies and reskins, many of them are either heavier or lighter than the original character. This can potentially make the two characters play vastly different from each other. Probably the best example of this that I can think of is Toon Link. I main Kirby (a mostly aerial fighter), so I typically have a hard time playing as normal Link (who is somewhat heavy and typically stays on the ground), but if I play as Toon Link (who is lighter), I can use Link's moves without having to break the habits I got from using Kirby. So, clones can be good if you like a character, but wish that they were lighter, faster, more powerful, etc.
Clones clones clones clones. They should just make a bunch of clones of me and take over the gaming world. Muhahaha!
On a serious note, I personally think having some clones are cool, but only if they are used sparingly. I wouldn't want half or even a quarter of the roster to be clone characters. While having a brand new move set brings something completely new to the already huge variety Smash if providing, having a hand full of clone characters adds a different kind of variety.
Just look at Fox and Falco from Melee. Both characters, on the outside, have the same move set, however, they are both played very differently at a high level. Fox is focused on setting up for his up smash, up air, wave shining, and shine spikes. Falco is focused on laser poking, juggling opponents, and spiking opponents with his down air. Same thing can be said about Marth and Roy. Marth is top tier while Roy is low tier. Same move set, but different properties can make a huge difference in a game.
I want to talk about the three clone characters presented in the leek.
Spoiler
Lucina: At first, I thought she would be better suited for a female skin of Marth. I personally thought that having a whole new character slot was a potential waste. The more I think about it, I no longer have a problem with Lucina being her own character. Using the reasoning that I stated above, she could end up playing very differently from Marth. Even if all they change is making Lucina's power even through out her whole sword instead of just the tipper, that will make a difference on how she plays. Characters will move differently when they are hit by Lucina's sword vs Marth's sword. Also, going deeper into the characters who allow the players to play a different gender. Those characters all have gender neutral names (Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, Mii, and Robin). If Lucina was going to be a gender swap of Marth, would you want her to be called Marth? Sure they could change Marth's name on the character select screen, but I don't see that happening. I think Sakura wanted her in the game more than Chrom.
Dr. Mario: Personally I don't have a problem with Dr. Mario's return. In fact, in the tournament scene, Dr. Mario was more popular than Mario. His pills worked very differently from Mario's fire balls. Yes, Dr. Mario could easily be a reskin of Mario, but he isn't. I can't speak for Sakura, but maybe he wanted to get some of the Melee players excited to see him return.
Dark Pit: I can't say I'm surprised to see this considering the teaser at the end of Palutena's video, but I thought he would be a color scheme of Pit. Dark Pit is Sakura's character, so he is free to put characters from game series he has created in his game. If I where in charge of making Smash Brothers, I would put all of my characters in that game. While I think Dark Pit could be replaced with another character, I'm not going to complain about Sakura choosing to add Dark Pit as his own character.
What else, I'm glad I am not in charge of selecting the characters for Smash. The roster would look completely different if I was in charge. What makes Smash so interesting is being surprised at what characters are selected. I mean, Mr. Game and Watch?!? Seeing that character actually made me do some research and I learned a bit of Nintendo history. I see Smash Brothers as a rich encyclopedia of Nintendo history. Even the third party characters have a huge history with Nintendo. From Sonic's rivalry to Mario to all of the Mega Man games in Nintendo. I may not agree with everything Sakura decides, but all three Smash Brothers games have been very successful. I'm positive that Smash 4 will be a major hit.

This is a very good point.
In all honestly, I use Clone characters more than the original characters. I prefer Roy's power based style to Marth's, the slight differences between Dr.Mario and Mario make me prefer the Doctor, and I much prefered Toon Link in Brawl to Link. I also prefer Falco compared to Fox, since I prefer more power based fighters to Speed based. But yeah, in a lot of cases, clones are not a bad thing.
It's like the secret fighters in Marvel vs Capcom. The secret characters (Excluding Roll and Onslaught.) are all, at first glance, recolors of their original counterparts, however, upon further examination, there's a few minor details that play a role in how you play as that version of the character.
I like his moveset. Air Slash is his Up+B. I guess Back Slash is his Side+B. I'm thinking just like in Xenoblade, it does extra damage when you attack from behind. B Neutral looks like Vision and it looks very similar to Marth/Ike/Lucina's counter move. I'm thinking Down+B will be Monado change.
I like his Final Smash which is Chain Attack. Though it doesn't look that different than Robin's Pair Up attack. But hey, that's what happens when you have a huge roster, you may run into similarities.
I don't know that much about Xenoblade, so this might have been a reference to another character in the game, but I'm pretty sure that was Eggman talking at the end.

Nope, it's actually Metal Face who is a major enemy from Xenoblade.
Still need to play Xenoblade Chronicles and I will, so right now the only reaction to this announcement is "Well that's cool I guess." It's definitely great to see some more expansion though.
