Okay, theory time. I bet this guy pulls a King of Red Lions, and reveals that he is the King! However... He did not have it his way, and now lives in a deserted land where his once-proud Kingdom stood.

Or... Ganondorf? I doubt it but that could be cool too, just sayin'.

There could be some credence to that, given his skin tone, and all. Ganondorf usually has red hair, but who knows how long Gerudo live, and I bet their hair would still turn white with old age. ![]()

If I recall correctly, Koume and Kotake were only 400 years old when you kicked their asses. So at least that long.

Ooh, ooh! I know! Maybe it's just a random NPC and it's a reference to Zelda 1. I know it's a long shot and all since this game is only trying its damnedest to be Zelda 1, but it could be true!
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, guys.

Either way, conjecture is fun

I don't understand how people are saying it's Ganondorf...when Calamity Ganon is circling Hyrule Castle. Like, wut?

Hmm, so that totally could be a white haired Ganondorf. If I recall correctly, Koume and Kotake were only 400 years old when you kicked their asses. So at least that long.

I wasn't taking this seriously, but if we're going to debate this...
Do we know when that phantom (what I'm calling it for now) begins to circle the castle? Is it there from the start?
*insert something about looking for a new body/ALttP Agahnim/alter egos/I don't know*
To be fair the phrase "just a strange old man, that's all" is highly suggestive. Who would be so self-dismissive and introduce themself as just someone unimportant unless they had something to hide (or at least a very troubled life)? Of course it could be only a developer joke/reference, but I'd like to think the quality of the writing in this game is good enough that the dialogue spoken by characters is true to their personality.
Also, we all called Fi's identity based on the first image/poster we saw for Skyward Sword, so I'm not writing off the theory about the old man being important just yet.

More Ganondorf thoughts... the phantom circling the castle is just a creation of Ganon's, not his actual self... he's waiting for Link to awaken and collect/reveal the rest of the Triforce, which is why he's camped out by Link's cave and notices him right off. Just thoughts which may or may not be nonsense.

I don't think it's Ganondorf, the old man that is. I think Calamity Ganon is just a shadow of its former self which is Ganon and Ganondorf. It would make sense considering it seems Calamity Ganon isn't entirely physical as if it's a spirit. I imagine Calamity Ganon's physical form is sealed away within the castle. Or maybe Calamity Ganon will act like Phantom/Puppet Ganon. I guess we will have to see, but judging by the fact it was confirmed you can go to the final boss at any time, I assume Calamity Ganon is the villain. It'd also make sense since Calamity means disaster and look what happened to Hyrule...
I don't have any present guesses on who the old man is... could be a BotW exclusive character similar to Midna, Fi, etc. being exclusive to their respective Zelda games. I initially thought it could be the Sage of Light Rauru from Ocarina of Time given in the stream they mentioned they were reminded of the owl in Ocarina of Time who was Rauru when the old man flew down to Link after completing the shrine on Mount Hylia. That, and his location near the Temple of Time. He's definitely important considering he knew about the voice (who I think is Zelda, since you can faintly hear Zelda's Lullaby on the piano in a cutscene on the tower, I think).
I doubt it's post Wind Waker, it doesn't seem to add up at all and all the proof we have is Koroks and sea salt.
1) Koroks were illustrated in A Link Between Worlds. And who's to say the Kokiri evolved into Koroks for different reasons - perhaps due to the massive destruction Calamity Ganon brought? We don't see anymore Kokiri down the timelines anyway. Considering they went as far as to remove NPCs and towns in the demo, why leave Korok if people act it's such a dead giveaway? And besides pre-Wind Waker I can see happening more even.
2) Sea salt doesn't automatically mean Wind Waker's ocean... what if it's a reference to the Sand Sea which is far more ancient? Skyward Sword references aren't out of the question since we literally see a statue of Hylia.
Anyone noticed this flying island seen in the trailer (very small though) and in gameplay? Very odd... City in the Sky or Skyloft? Looks like we might get actual air transportation too.

I wouldn't take the Koroks as evidence of any kind. Being forest spirits that can take on any shape it's probably just closer to their true form (if they even have one) than the Kokiri look, which they probably took to make Link feel more like he belonged. Even the bird form in SS seems more true to forest spirits.
