Is there a fast way of grinding money in this quest?
Also, missing a key in the first part of level 8.

Level 1 is probably the fastest way to grind money and finding hidden treasures across the world also helps.
As for keys did you bomb the damaged panel in the lower floor area?

I'm also missing a key in level 8.
I got 3 keys but it requires 4 keys (can't activate 2nd warp tile).

Yes, I did bomb the damaged panel. fell down to the sewers on the right hand side, but couldn't open the door at the end.
I think the key I need is the one in this post: #254
but can't remember how to get it now...

There is a bombable wall on that path after you fall down in that hole a statue marks it and your sword can detect bombable walls.
have you looked for a key in the room with the golden boss key chest there is one there.

Im having some trouble in level 8... after the second elevator there's a room with a diggdogger. 1 screen south of there, not sure how to open the door?

In a room with a collapsing bridge you have to reflect the fireballs to the torches.

Did you do the special dungeon yet and the eighth floor of the tower before level 8?

What am I supposed to have before heading up to the mountains? I want to make sure I am not missing anything. I'm not having much luck figuring out where to go. I used a superbomb but it led me to a small lake that doesn't seem to be much of anything.

Did you dive under the fish since they found something interesting.
Well have you tried the hidden dungeon a guy in a worn down house hints about it in the main city.
That mountain area can be one hell of maze if not careful, but the path is somewhat linear and there is a nice short cut once you climbed it to get back to level 7.

I found the hidden dungeon (all three entrances), but haven't done it yet. I thought I tried to dive everywhere but I'll try again. I just wanted to make sure there isn't a significant item I was supposed to get between 6 and 7 or something like that.

You get a good reward for doing it and it is available after level 5 and you get the arrow upgrade, but as time goes and the progression the dungeon gets easier. That dungeon is challenge and is very complex, but as you open more paths the dungeon will get easier. beware of your surrounding in that level and pay attention to some of the smallest of details.
Most fish will represent a dive spot.

Yeah, any time you find a looping point in any quest without scripts, it's best to stop after 4 loops. That's the max length of mazes. If you haven't heard a jingle after 4 loops, you're not going anywhere. ^_^;
yeah after the 10th time i was starting to think nothing was gonna happen but had to be sure
The dark wasteland can be difficult but did you finish off the eighth floor in the tower it will help greatly through the dark wastelands and make most of the enemies weak as kittens. I personally tend to stun them and reflect their shots back at them.
um i forget what is the thing on the 8th floor
