Really nice shots you have there so far! Are you sure this isn't for a project of yours? B)

The only criticism I have is this:

The vines at the top and bottom look incredibly out of place with the ground. I think you should probably use a different colour for the top and bottom parts of the vines to blend well with everything else.

A lot of people have said my screens seem too "empty" or "plain". Here's a few examples, and I'm willing to hear some critique.

I don't know about to empty but plain could be a word for it. Overall they're not bad screens.

The first one could use from tree branches near the top and bottom of the screen. I take it your suppose to be in a forest. Those ruins(?) are also in very good shape... Perhaps a few debris and broken floor tiles could add to it.

The second pic. I like the statue off to one side! We don't have enough asymmetrical screens these days. However I would break apart the puddle into smaller sections and move a few bushes or other objects in towards the centre. Again if your in a forest or something maybe a few tree branches or boulders on the edges to help tie the screen with its neighbours.

Ugh deserts. Break up the darker ground. Use it high light paths or areas were the sand has blown off the harder rocky areas. If your desert is really sandy try adding sand dunes. These work really well to tie screens together and make sense as screen filler. Also good for open snowy areas! Use cliffs think of the rock outcrops in the southern states that you see in western movies. I highly suggest avoiding deserts like Sahara. If your desert is big then place a oasis and dry riverbeds with puddles to keep screens interesting. Lastly that purple smoke is quite sharpe. Perhaps making it transparent would blend it better but still keep it noticeable in a nice way rather than in your face HERE I AM!

My 2 cents!

One last shot for good measure:

Made Central Hyrule within a single day... pretty damn proud honestly. Might change/add some things later, we'll see.

Tried out DoR... too time consuming for my liking. Only managed to produce a mediocre screen within an hour.

I think I'll just stick with GB. :P

I like the subscreen you made. The leaves are too simple for that tileset, especially in that screen, and the grass lacks deapth compared to the other tiles - though nothing of that is your fault and the shot is a lot better than anything I could make in 1 hour.

If you want a bit diversion from EZGBZ you could try to edit some of the firebird-tiles to be more easy to use. I don't know how far you worked with that tileset so far, but the idea was something appealing like mc but easy to use like EZGBZ afterall and so far I find the dungeon-tiles to be far away from being able to create screens as easily and great looking as you would manage with EZGBZ.

after making that excellent screen you WANT to use a crappy, blocky, ugly tileset?!

Absolutely (if this "crappy, blocky, ugly tileset" you are referring to is EZGBZ)! It's got more charm, minimal (if not no) style clash, far less messy aesthetics and it's far easier to use and personalize. I prefer EZGBZ by a large margin. I would be using Firebird if it was complete otherwise. None of the tilesets really captivate me into using them.

I also like EZGBZ the most. I find it easier to work with Firebird because of the colors, in EZGBZ I have huge troubles to choose a palette and the right c-set, everything I make looks unsatisfying. But than I see a good dungeon screen, for example from demon link, and think that looks by far better than anything I managed so far with firebird.

With DoR I have some troubles, especially the lack of color depth and the huge amount of too simple tiles. Firebird is superior in that but also has the problem of too many mixed styles. I remember at least 4 different mountain types, DoR, GB, Pure and improved BS, Beside Pure I think all of them fit great into the tileset but they differ so much it feels wrong to use more than one in a quest. Same with Water, the MC-Water feels too detailed but the GB-water not detailed enough. Biggest problem are the dungeons, the doors use layering and are far from the easy use in EZGBZ. The walls are like a compromise to get GB-walls into the tile-set but I think they do not fit too well (simple and most GB-walls look far better), are a bit boring and not as well to use as GB-walls. I try a bit around to make progress with the tileset but I honestly have no idea in which direction I want the tileset to go... beside the easy use another thing I love about the EZGBZ are the possible combination of colors. Since DoR and Firebird try to look more natural too much color looks horrible, with EZGBZ you can use as many colors as you want, as long they fit to each other the screen looks fine with them.

"Alana and Zatchel... After all the trust Princess Zelda put in you two, both decide to stab her in the back. Not only have you betrayed her, but all of Hyrule as well. Last time, both bested me in battle. Now, I am confident and strong enough to end this once and for all. Maybe I will regain Zelda's trust once more after this task..." - Link

Looking good there, Sheik. I'm not entirely sold on the colours but the design is great so far.

I'm working on making an exterior, castle-themed area, and I feel like there are some things I could improve upon here. First off, I'm not sure about the stairs, and whether or not they should be kept as they are or  be made longer. In addition, I'm wondering if I should keep the bridge as long as it is, or shorten it. Any suggestions?

Also, the subscreen is something I could also use advice with. Is it too simplistic, or does it look fine? Thanks!

*EDIT*

As for the snow falling from the sky, does it look fine or should I make the entire screen snowing? I just worry that if it is all snow, then everything would become far too occluded.
