Ah, thank you. No, I was using the latest release on the downloads page (which is just labelled "2.50", and its executable is dated 12/20/2012.)
The hookshot works there in the version you linked. The patch notes even indicate: "The hookshot can pass downward through a solid combo in old quests", which I'd presume is the issue, even though I've only got a vague idea of what a combo must be.
Torn between pressing on, and going back to 984 since I'm probably really only 2-3 hours in (if you take out all the wandering trying to figure out where to go ,which is way, WAY above average for this quest.)
Anyway, thank you for the suggestion.
Edit: And ... I'm reasonably certain 984 was the better idea. Continuing onwards, it seems that
a) The Behelith (red-blob-thing after L4) isn't functioning as the blue armor as advertised (either that, or the game's difficulty curve just went through the roof)
b) There's going to be issues with bushes on the outermost tiles (including one in the wildreness close to the L5 mushroom area where you have to die to backtrack)
c) My magic boomerang keeps turning into a regular boomerang, and I'm not farming 500 gold from tall grass AGAIN.
Not really enthusiastic about doing that stealth level again ... oh well.
