I decided to just post my messed up dungeon. I am really afraid. The marked tiles are reserved for a unwalkable 2x2 statue I have no tiles for, did not add overhead-layers yet and I use tile-warps for the doors - so they don't need to fit.

http://imgur.com/7cOiPJS

Edit: Dumb as I am I forgot to mention the things I want a 2nd opinion for.

#1 Do you think the design is to cramped? Especially because I use insta-warps for doors you often run into objects since you have no chance to realize about them while scrolling.

#2 I am a bit silly about overhead-issues (my perfectionism is a crybaby not OK with how objects are visually clipping if items pass through an overhead-object) and one early attempt to solve this was to completly avoid doors to be overhead. As a result I have know these cut doors on the sides and after I finally managed to create a bearable door-sprite I am really unhappy about the cut now.

#3 This is thought to be used in firebird (it should be obvious I edited MC-walls from DoR to be upper and lower walls), do you think it does fit into firebird? Also, do you also feel as if the firebird-tileset looses its originality if I import MC-tiles into it or is it just me beeing silly?

I spend hours to create the gimmick for this dungeon (a lot of complicated stuff including 10 extra screens, sprite and combo carry overs) - only to see how greyswandir comes up with a script that does exactly the same a lot easier... In short I mostly will dump this dungeon anyway, but I want to know how to do better the next time.

Edit: It really helps to "speak" to others, I finally can say to myself that I am not fit to use an unfinished tileset after pointing out all these things... I will upload the actual progress as demo, feel free to look into it.

Nightmeres: White water? I don't like that idea at all. The beams look odd but looks like a nice screen. :D
Naru: Looks good!

Here's level one in my quest:

@Joelmacool: Very nice looking GB-styled water dungeon screenshot.

Alright, now I know this is a rather generic dungeon screenshot, so I'm not looking for critique on the design of the screen. However, I am looking for opinions on the pallete as well as overall color structure of this particular area. I have begun working on my level 1, which is going to have a bit of an aquatic theme to it. The pallete the screen is using is completely custom, but I don't know if it works well, and would like others' opinions on this. Thank you.

I like the blue/purple theme for a water dungeon. I think the blue you're using on the walls could use a little more contrast, or maybe less saturation. I dunno, something about the wall color needs to be adjusted. The water color looks good for a dungeon.

While I prefer multiple colours the grey doors stand out a bit too much for me. Maybe colorate the wall-parts that are not little stones also gray. While I like the blue of the wall I doubt I like it next to the water, the blues do not really support each other

I don't like the blue of the wall. Perhaps it could be made into a blue-gray to mix with the water's blue and silver doors? Otherwise it's perfect.

I brightened up the blue of the walls a bit, and I've also come up with an improved floor graphic than I had previously. I don't think I'll change the archways since I do want them to not be the same exact color as the walls, but hopefully the brighter wall color cleans that up a bit.

I like how you changed the floors, but I personally think the walls look worse. The blue is just too bland.

Could you make the bottom of the wall where it meets the floor, as well as the top of the wall where it would meet the ceiling, a grey color like the doorway? If you still want the doorway to stand out, try using the darker shades of grey you have on the bottom. It should still make the door stand out since the top part of it is so light.

... Not sure if this is what you meant, Kurt91, but decided to try it out for the lulz.

the blue rocks look a bit weird. I liked the first shot's palette, but I think the rocks should be a few different shades of grey. interesting entranceway door.

I suggest you try to do some hue-shifting on the blue shades, as they all look kinda bland. For instance, take this palette in mind:

wFckXzW.png

I wouldn't call it a perfect example of hue-shifting, but it looks pretty well taking in mind the various shades of brown present there. As you can observe, the lightest brown balances well with the other darker shades. I dunno, consider this tip, and I know you can do something amazing with it! :D (BTW, I recommend combining mixes of blue and purple; blue for the lights and purple (indigo?) for your darks.

I liked the first blue better but the new blue fits the water very well. Not sure if walls that has a same tone as the water are a good choice in DoR though. Demonlinks idea of mixing indigo into it sounds awesome though. Also beside the little stones there are three lines on the wall (the one on the ground is colorated dark gray), why not try out to make one a brighter gray and one purple like the doors?
