"At the end of the day, Chrom would just end up being another plain-old sword-wielder like Marth and Ike. Compared with other characters, he lacks any unique characteristics."

This just in, Sakurai is not a fan of Chrom. Also, I honestly call bullshit on this. Let's say Lucina replaced Chrom's spot (Rather than her already being planned.) , in what way is she not another plain-old sword user? I mean, both Chrom and Lucina could have easily had different movesets, especially considering Fire Emblem: Awakening had a crapton of Skills to choose from. I'm not against Lucina, but there is no excuse for her to be a clone, due to how many things they could have very easily done to her moveset.

Sounds like pure laziness to me. Good going Sakurai on making what could have been an awesome character just a Marth for newbs to use.

There are a million options for sword moves that I can imagine. Heck, why not bring back Marth/Roy's neutral special from Melee and give it to her?

I hope Lucina is a lot more nimble than Marth (similar to Toon Link).

This news also supports the idea that Falco and Ganondorf will most likely make a reappearance to this version of the game despite being clones of Fox and Captain Falcon respectively. I honestly don't think Wolf is coming back. He was probably my least favorite character in Brawl. They might as well give all of his moves to Falco though I really liked how they redid Falco in Brawl. And if Falco gets confirmed, I hope his FS is an Arwing instead of a Landmaster. Having 3 Landmaster final smashes was so uninspired in Brawl imo.

Not only having clones in Smash is a bad thing itself, but still dealing with clones in the fourth entry in the series and the very weird criteria Sakurai uses to (de)clone characters makes it worse. That's a lenghty discussion I recently had in another forum.

Why is Luigi no longer a pure clone of Mario while Ganondorf and Wolf were (semi)clones of Falcon and Fox/Falco in Brawl? Luigi usually does the same things as Mario in the games (even he was a mere pallette swap of Mario at some time), whereas Ganondorf has a plenty amount of attacks and moves to use, and it's pretty strange to see Wolf using the same moves and tactics than his rival...

But at least Brawl had semiclones, not pure clones like Melee. That was a small improvement... and now he's going back to the Melee way? I think he should have learnt the lesson after three games, right? Yet he rejects Chrom but maintains Lucina in the roster...

I bet Marth, Lucina and Robin all have the Landmaster as their final smash!

Lucina: Personally, I prefer the air.

Falco: Hey! That's my line!

From a technical point-of-view, the six melee clones (Dr. Mario, Falco, Pichu, Ganondorf, Young Link, Roy) were model swaps, hence they are considered clones. In 64, Luigi, Doug, and Jiggs are clones based on Mario, Samus, and Kirby. Brawl didn't have clones. Each character is unique and not a mod of another character.

From a gameplay point-of-view I'd only consider Dr. Mario and SSBM Falco to be clones, but even that is a stretch IMO.

When people talk of "clones", most of the time they're talking about a character's moveset.  Dr. Mario and Mario are perfect examples of clones from Melee.  Marth and Roy as well.  In Brawl, as in Melee, Ganondorf and Captain Falcon are considered clones, as well as Fox, Falco, and Wolf (who wasn't in Melee.)

I don't see how that's bad though. The characters are still really different. Take Marth and Roy: similar moves but totally different style.

Well, now I'm hyped. Source for who wants it. Oh, and there was a rumor that CoroCoro would reveal the cast of Smash Bros. on August 12th I think, but it was cleared up that they only meant the cast that's been revealed so far, meaning there'll still be some surprises. Also, less than three months to go until the 3DS version. Can't wait.

I've never understood peoples' objections to clones. They seem to assume that clone characters are somehow taking up a roster space that should go to a totally new character. But that's the whole point. Clones require fewer resources, meaning we get more characters overall, and more people get to play the characters they love.

Of course, as a Lucas main, I may be somewhat biased. (Even though he's usually described as a "semi-clone".)

So really, Lucas I wouldn't lump into a pure clone category. While his attacks are similar to Ness's, his playstyle is completely different, as the two have a lot of their strengths and weaknesses reversed. I can kinda seem the disappointed in Lucina being basically a straight up clone though, as there was potential for that same kind of Ness/Lucas situation here that seems to be being passed over.

Teamudf made me realize something: There's only been two playable villains announced for Smash so far, Bowser and Dedede. To be fair, Brawl only had four, those two, Ganondorf, and Wolf, five if you count Wario, but the villain lineup is kinda small here so far. Hopefully they reannounce Ganondorf, or a new Zelda villain like Ghirahim, or surprise us with other new villain characters. Some diversity is always nice.
