The 3D, behind-the-back, realtime combat system to copy is not Skyrim, but is instead Kingdom Hearts, and even Final Fantasy realized this, which is why they're doing it for 15.  That system is based entirely on the player's skill and reflex, instead of numbers, and their ability to use their skills to close the gap between the enemy's powers and the player's defenses (i.e. Dodge Rolling, Blocking and Flying).

With that said, the system for this game looks closer to that format, abandoning the hit and wait system that was prevalent in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, but I'd like to see more of the different and unique enemy AI in the finished game.  We know bosses all have to be distinct, but it's also important for there to be a decent amount of archetypes for common enemies, so they don't all feel copy paste with a different skin.

I don't think Aonuma has much say in console development, Cukeman, he's mainly just the Zelda guy. Also, as far as we've seen, menus do pause the action.

From the way it looks, both are an option- for the sake of weapons, bows, and shields, you can quick select through them via shoulder button+stick, or you can go into the pause menu to change if you need to.

I do absolutely love that there's no main sword that's just given to you.  That in itself is a big change from Zelda, and it's very much taking Wind Waker's system of taking enemy weapons and improving on it tenfold.  It'll be nice that we'll have certain weapons for different scenarios, with more than just "this does x damage at y swing speed," taking account into durability and effectiveness against certain enemy types, such as axes being better against defensive opponents, or spears being useful for ranged melee strikes.  On that note, I do hope that when we find the Master Sword in the game, Link holds it up all dramatic-like as he does in other games... but as he does the first test swing to feel how mighty it is, a chunk of the blade just falls off.  That sucker looked old and rusted as hell.

Regarding the gamepad, I'm actually glad to hear we won't have to be looking back and forth from it to the TV. The games that use the gamepad best are those that make light use of it, and don't expect you to constantly be staring at it. To use an example, Xenoblade X, a game BotW is frequently being compared to, has a map affixed to the gamepad screen, that lets you quickly tap around to see and use quick travel points or manage a probe network. Or you can just put the whole game on the gamepad with the lower right button. I think a map system like that would work well for BotW. But anything else is too much. Kinda silly that it took Nintendo until the end of the console's life for them to realize that.

Re Master Sword, an idea I saw that I kinda liked was that you could totally get the Master Sword early... but it'll suck until you power it up. If you can power it up. Like, possibly worst item in the game suck. That could be neat.

Something I'm slightly worried about is the enemies. It looks like they went back to their Twilight Princess ways with the Bokoblins (etc) just standing there as Link wailed on them. I'm guessing that it's simply because it's the beginning of the game and they won't fight back much. But like, what's the point of powering up your weapons if they don't attack you or defend anyways?

So you can kill em off faster, I guess.

Sounds like Dynasty Warriors and its clones.

Future enemies I imagine and hope. I'm hoping we get some huge and intimidating enemies this time around. There was a giant enemy in one of the opening scenes in the trailer. We also have the Guardians. There's also bosses too! I'm pretty sure Bokoblins will just be the frosting this time around (I hope at least). I don't want this to be another Skyward Sword with lack of enemy variety and exclude enemies with great potential such as Darknuts. I doubt it with such a huge world like this.

Also Cukeman, I imagine the slate is still a representation of the GamePad. You have gyroscope controls built into the GamePad which are used.

I'm honestly loving how the game is no longer afraid of giving you more than one heart of damage this early one. Even Link's own bombs can be devastating this time around. So I imagine a three heart minimalist challenge will be pretty tough.

I fully support this.

I also wonder if Octorocks will make an appearance as land enemies in 3D finally.

I'm also kinda sick of Bokoblins. With such variety in weapons it would be fool hardy to not have a wide and varied selection of enemies, not just palette swapped Bokoblins with different equipment.

So, weapons have a durability now, and you have to swipe new weapons from enemies in order to keep yourself armed.

Do weapons drop when an enemy is killed, or do you have to actively work on stealing it while fighting them? Are we going to have to deal with Fallout/Skyrim levels of carry weight and inventory management, or will you just have a weak default sword with infinite durability and only carry one special or unique weapon at a time? What about when weapons break? Can you carry the broken weapon with you until you find a way to repair it, whether it be from a blacksmith in town or fixing it yourself, or does it disappear when it breaks and you have to find a new one?

I'm just wanting to know if there's a way for us to play through the whole game with a broken stub of a weapon, or something odd like Skyrim's Fork and Knife. Also, a dual-wielding Link would be pretty badass! (Or ridiculous if we can get him dual-wielding a pair of Darknut-sized weapons)

Apparently destroyed weapons are permanently gone. Collecting weapons is easy, you can knock them away from enemies and take them or just kill them then take them.
