Hey Shane, about your demo issue, you know that the ZC Spring Expo has been reannounced this year due for the middle of April, right? If you can crank out a playable demo in two months time, you'll be able to have it showcased in the Expo, which is a terrific experience, much more memoriable than starting it in an ordinary Project Thread. icon_smile.gif Sounds like something to shoot for, if you ask me.

I intend to try, though considering the sheer size of Project RCS, two months is extremely hard pressed to get the demo finished up to the end of Level 1 like I want it. I'm giving it the best effort I can though.

And I have already decided when and how I will release the tech-demo I already have done, and the official Thread. But I'm not telling~ icon_cat.gif

Thanks for mentioning the Spring Expo, even though it wasn't directed at me. icon_smile.gif I decided to release the next demo then - I've been calling it the next major release of the current demo but it's going to have too much stuff in it to call it that now... icon_razz.gif

Today, I finished the lowlands portion of the overworld. That's about a third of the quest done and the Badlands will be next.

New enemy list:
  • Seraph (Overworld) - Done.
  • Z3 Popo (Levels 2 and 4) - Done.
  • Wolfo (Level 5) - Not started yet.
  • Camofols (Levels 3 and 6) - Done.
  • Final boss - Not started yet.
ZLW status: 30 % complete.

Oh yeah, the ZC Spring Expo has giving me some sort of huge motivation. Keep in mind the demo is fairly small. So I think I'll have the time. icon_smile.gif There might as well be a video featuring a area not in the demo as well. If I have enough time to squeeze the video in (because I may not have the time to finish the area I'll be showcasing). As of this morning, I finished editing GB Link sprites. It was a very very simple task, now moving on to the NPC. I'll do the items and enemies when the time is necessary. Also planned another cutscene at the start. It'll be a tad humorous if development goes to plan.

EDIT: Would any of you kill me if I move the due date my announcement thread to the day after I release my demo? That way either way a video will be showcased, more content will be shown, and more information and so forth.

Also good luck, Schwa! icon_biggrin.gif

There should never be any pressure. It's your project so you're entitled to do whatever you want with it, screw what other people might say. icon_smile.gif It seems to be an easily missed theme here, so for the reminder, you're welcome.

I don't believe in luck, but as usual, I'm flattered. icon_slycool.gif

Finished up a few spells. The only two I need to finish are the first and the last that the player will get. Funny enough, I'm doing the first script last. icon_xd.gif I've been getting more scripting done now than I have in awhile. O_o

Well last night I finished the overworld layout for the Expo demo. Of course I still have a lot of work making the actual locations work...

I finished a side area that I hadn't worked on in months. Considering how simple the area is, this boggles me greatly.

I finally fixed the bug that kept me from obtaining Bombchus in my quest. You know what I did wrong? I forgot to check "Equipment item" on the Bombchu bag. Epic fail. Now I just gotta fix another bug related to this item that popped up, then I can release the last update before the final release!

I finished up most of my pre-sword dungeon, and only have the left wing and boss to finish up. After that, I'll have the minimum amount I want done for an expo demo. Anything after that will just be extra.

I also realized that my quest is very unorganized. I'll probably carry out a replacement file with better organized tiles and tilesets, and try to make some improvements on how it should play through. For example, I tend to use empty space left over in the dungeon maps for side-view areas rather than entirely new maps. If I don't remove the minimap from the subscreens, the player will be bound to notice. Also, by rebuilding my tileset and palettes, it should be much easier to make changes to existing tiles as I come up with better art techniques. Another example is that after building my side-view areas, I discovered the side-view ladder scripts in the database, and will need to completely rebuild them to take advantage of it.

Basically, my expo demo will have identical dungeon and overworld layouts, but will not be used in any way for the final quest.

Hey Kurt, over the weeks you've talked about it, it sounds like you're re-re-reorganizing various parts of your game so many times, hardly any actual progress work on it gets done! icon_blink.gif Don't fall into the trap of perfectionism. It's okay if things look or feel a little rough until the final product is 100% ready, you know.

The perfectionism thing isn't really that bad, it's just that I realized that I can't just go back and fix things that I'm going to want to fix later very easily. I'm going to finish up my demo, then go back and re-build the parts I want to redo. I'm keeping my demo version so I can just copy the maps over. That shouldn't be too long to do at all, really. It sounds worse than it really is. Besides, most of that "re-re-reoranizing" is being done in Paint. I don't want to do things a bazillion times, so I'm keeping the original quest version and planning out my better one beforehand. It's mainly redrawing my water and cliffs, and re-sorting my palette to take better advantage of the different C-Sets' properties. Besides, this is my first quest, I'm still learning a good way of doing things. I only have the second version started because I thought my original broke beyond repair. I fixed it, but now I have a second version to do something with.

My real problem with it is that I seem to have an incredibly short attention span towards this thing. Honestly, I would have to compare my way of thinking to something like the Curiousity Core. (What that? What's over there? Ooh, what's that?) I'm only starting to get back into things just now because it finally got to where finishing up Fate/Stay Night was getting too depressing. (I have to be one of the only people to read an eroge visual novel and skip over the naughty bits because I'm more interested in the story) I got to the epilogue on Heaven's Feel, and could not bear to want to go for the alternate ending. I liked the good ending on Unlimited Blade Works much better. On the bright side, though, the music was beyond beautiful, and I found some great tracks to use for parts of my quest.

I was chewing my nails when I read this, and when I hit the word "Paint", I almost choked on it. icon_odd2.gif

Even though I've developed the intro and such (all though I did do a mockup of my quests overworld)... I can finally actually get around to developing everything as I planned 90% of the game's overworld and dungeons. icon_biggrin.gif As of important NPCs and caves, I'll plan them as I go along, I wasted 2 months of planning with little development... Time to shine or something. icon_razz.gif

My goal: Get a demo ready! icon_xd.gif

Edit: As of now I'm editing Link (and the NPCs and Monsters soon enough) to give his face/shoes/hands a light brown-ish colour rather then green.

What's wrong with Paint? It was free, doesn't do anti-aliasing by default like Paint.NET, and works just fine for me for pixel-by-pixel detail work, as well as being able to use the color-swap feature on the eraser to try quick palette changes to see how they look. I can even use the custom colors sliders to get new shades for adding extra detail to my tiles. If you know a good alternative I don't have to pay for, I'd be happy to give it a try. I just haven't been having any problems so far with what I've been using.

No no, nothing's "wrong" with it. Being a very-very-not-graphics person, I just think it's freaking ballsy not to do it in ZQuest. icon_blind.gif I mean I can't even see it.
