Two-Week Contest Review #7

A Boy and His Cursor by Avataro

This is a quest that if you believe it has any resemblance to Zelda 1, you're crazy. This quest is based on puzzles (surprise! :D), which is really interesting. But is it great and well made? Let's see...

Note: This review will be short because every screen is about solving puzzles, and I'm not going to talk about every single screen :D

Gameplay

This quest's gameplay, as said above, is radically different from Zelda 1. The gameplay consists of puzzles, and you have to solve them to get a diamond.

What you have to do is use your cursor, which can break cracked blocks, and push blocks, to get to your diamond:

zelda006.png

zelda007.png

Clicking those cracked blocks with your cursor makes them disappear. Cool, huh?

Anyways, you continue forth in collecting your diamonds, and the cursor will sometimes, on specific levels, give you an update that allows you to do more things with the environment you are trying to solve. Also, the later levels can get very tricky, especially those that have "bug Ganon" chasing after you, forcing you to solve the puzzle quickly or else we will kill you. Those levels can sometimes become very tedious. Here's one of them with bug Ganon:

zelda024.png

Aaaah! That thing is chasing me!! :)

Also, some levels can become VERY hard. Here's one that I spent like 15 minutes trying to solve before I finally got it.

While the gameplay is very fun and creative, there is one thing that really annoys me. It's when there is a line of text with the cursor explaining things, especially those that you get an update, where if you screw up and have to continue, you have to wait until the update happens again. Sometimes this happens repeatedly, and it can get very annoying. And I'm pretty sure there is a way to make the text stop appearing after you've seen it once. That's pretty much my only annoyance with the gameplay, so great job! :D

Story

This quest has kind of a story, but is essentially collect 50 diamonds to "save the world". Oh, and there is an a pretty big plot twist at the end. So you'll be surprised with that.

Design Attention

There's not much to say here, as the design of the quest as a whole is essentially the placement and creativity of the puzzle blocks itself. But I guess I'll show some screens that were very clever, at least to me.

zelda012.png

zelda033.png

On the last screenshot, you have to click on the blocks to teleport them to the gate, and ...., you should see it.

There are many more cool screens that what I showed, but I didn't obviously take a screenshot of every single screen.... :D

Music

The music was the same throughout the puzzles, and it was a good choice, but it got really repetitive after awhile. If the music would change to something more intense after, say, halfway through the quest, the music enjoyment would be better. At least the boss was a very nice theme!! :D

Concluding Thoughts/Summary

A Boy and His Cursor is a neat and clever quest, that, while it can get annoying, should be something that everyone should play since this shows the true power of what Zelda Classic can do.

Strengths

  • Creative use of scripts to achieve something amazing
  • Cleverly created puzzles to solve
  • Neat things you can do with your cursor
  • Great attention to making the puzzles
  • Good music choices
  • Requires thinking :D

Weaknesses

  • Levels that can take large amounts of time to figure out
  • Text doesn't disappear after reading it once, which can get annoying if you have to continue many times
  • Repetitive music

Rating: 9.4/10 (Amazing)

Database Rating: 5/5 (Great)

Okay. This "many people getting sore throats" is very weird. But let's just all blame Avataro's Ganon's Curse quest like Theryan said, no? :D I don't know, but either there's an outbreak of the common cold or something evil is happening on PureZC..... :P Hope no one else contracts this evil.

Hey thanks a lot for the great review Davi! I personally loved my idea of automatic and dynamic strings that play secondary while you can still walk, do things, etc and don't even had to press a button to continue the text. I'll probably just add a button that skips the dialogue in an update. I didn't think off that it could become annoying when waiting for the new ability, etc.

And hope you get well soon! Don't blame my ganon curse, it can only do something if you stay still for too long! Good luck with the your next reviews. I think you'll do it in time before the poll ends, or even starts (maybe)! :D

Only the triforce can lift the curse, so you need the 8 pieces. lol :)

Well the curse seems to have started today so I think if I get all the triforce from Hero Of Dreams than my part of the curse will be lifted.

No! I swear I had nothing to do with it! :D

You're right, there is no way.... Maybe... :superevil:

Oh, ya , I forgot to mention that I though it was cool how you could do the puzzle while you're walking. I really liked that. The only annoying part is that you can't do anything if you have to wait for an update or so, or for the final boss, if you died during it. And trust me, that was really minor. If it was major you'd probably have a much lower score, so don't take it the wrong way because the automatic and dynamic message thing was really cool and I loved it. A message skipping button would still be nice ;), but maybe you could make it only available if you've seen the message once?

Also, maybe I was staying still when I was on my computer.... :P.

And you're welcome for the review! I have to say your quest was definitely one of the best in the two-week contest. Probably made me smarter too! :D

Only the triforce can lift the curse, so you need the 8 pieces. lol :)

Collected! Maybe I won't have it anymore? We'll see.... :)

Well the curse seems to have started today so I think if I get all the triforce from Hero Of Dreams than my part of the curse will be lifted.

That's good. Hope you succeed! ;)

Two-Week Contest Review #8

Anthus' 2 Week Entry by Anthus

This quest, based on looking at the screenshot of the quest in the database, is very different from Zelda 1. Let's explore! :D

Gameplay

This quest's gameplay is different from Zelda 1 and involves many creative ideas. You start out in this screen:

zelda001.png

Where am I?

Ya, definitely not Zelda 1. But looks really cool!

So in this quest you go around getting items necessary to get passed some trees to the north. In your exploration, you find 2 new (maybe scripted) items, and the third item is Roc's feather, required for the sideview part of the quest. Here are some screenshots of both of the new items:

zelda011.png

As it says, the beam of the sword is fire.

zelda017.png

And in this one it is ice.

Those items are pretty cool, and the ice one is required to get passed the trees.

I have to say that this quest has some really nice and creative concepts and items. Also, the idea behind it is very new and fresh, which makes the quest stand out in that sense. Great job on creativity and uniqueness! :D

Before we talk about what's behind the trees though, let's talk about something I found during the quest. I found a shop where they sell things are high prices. The problem is that grinding is like so frustrating because it is impossible to get Nayru's Love at a price of 599. By the end of the game I only had like 50 rupees! So the shop was essentially worthless.

Now let's talk about what's after the trees. I'll tell you. You go through some screens to find this:

zelda020.png

Which teleports you to....

zelda021.png

This. Um....

Yes. That was the end of the game. I was really stunned by this because I did not expect the quest to be so short! I got all of the necessary items in like 15 minutes only to find the end of the quest after that? Yes, it must have taken some time to set up the scripts and screens, but given the time, the quest probably could have been longer. Other two-week quests were at least 1 hour and a half, and then to play a quest that only took 20 minutes to complete is absolutely weird. That's almost all I have against the quest, by the way.

Let's move on to the next section....

Story

This quest has no story other than find Zelda after getting some items. That's it.

Design Attention

This design of this quest is marvelous and interesting. It looks like you are in space or something like that, which is cool. Let's share screenshots like always.

zelda005.png

zelda004.png

zelda013.png

zelda016.png

Nice screen design, and impressive too.

While the screen design is neat, there are a couple of bugs that I found with it. Let's see:

zelda015.png

This is a sideview screen. On top of me is a block (on the next screen). If I jump here, I will go through the block, which looks weird too.

Another error I saw....

zelda022.png

If you go down on this screen, you'll appear....

zelda023.png

Right here. This could be fixed easily, so, ya.

Music

The music choice for the short quest was actually really good and made the experience better. Good job on that, Anthus! :)

Concluding Thoughts/Summary

Anthus' 2 Week Entry is a very creative and unique quest full of fresh ideas, but the really small length of the quest hurts it. If the quest was longer the rating would increase drastically.

Strengths

  • Innovative and unique quest theme and ideas
  • Nice swords that have interesting effects
  • Great screen design that looks very nice
  • Great music choice

Weaknesses

  • Somewhat useless shop due to high price and low grinding ability
  • WAY too short
  • A couple of screen bugs that are extremely minor

Rating: 7.7/10 (Good)

Database Rating: 4/5 (Good)

That's not good... The universe is conspiring against you, and me, but I was able to collect the pieces, maybe I can share them? ;)

Just be careful not to split the triforce of wisdom into 8 shards (Because then ganon comes and kidnaps you, You get your curse again and I am stuck trying to find 8 shards of a triforce in 9 dungeons).
