How can you not? Seriously, there is such a big difference between them two. The .PNG has much better colors, it shows more shading on the brown table and desk, while .JPG makes it look crappy.
This is pointless to argue about it. It won't change the votes. Just avoid using JPGs unless you want ugly colors.

You may want to keep a considerable length between your eyes and your monitor. It's bad for your eyesight. Why I said something like that was because I did that very thing and I STILL can't tell between PNG and JPG, even looking at the table you suggested. Seriously, there's no reason to fuss at a JPG pic if you're not trying to steal what the creator has on display. Man, quite a few computer and ZC-related taboo around here.

man, just look at anything in those images, the lights are washed out, the sprites are muddy the flags are just a mess, I could keep going but i cant be bothered

and just to further illustrate everything is much more noticable when I zoom in on the images:

I cannot get this whining and moaning about jpgs either. Why do people care what format the shot is saved in unless they're planning to steal the tiles, and if that's their plan then... blah! Sure, sometimes jpgs make the screen a bit worse and blurrier, but I've seen many cases where jpg compression actually improves the screenshot.

And revfan, no need to feel so disappointed and depressed. If you keep trying, you should eventually win a SOTW. And evcen if you don't win, so what? What's so great about winning a SOTW? There's no real price except for seeing your shot on the main page for a week.
Anyhoo, just keep tryin'.

One of them is a PNG, the other a max quality JPG. Can you tell the difference?

Quite so. The JPG looks smudged as hell.

the reason I will not vote for jpg is, its a joke format. Anyone who uses it has a stupid reason to, they either don't want anyone to steal their stuff, or they're aware of how bad the graphics are and use jpg to hide their ****ness.
first is pretentious, second is cowardly.
plus if the jpg quality has made it unable for me to crit, I cannot find a solid reason to vote for it- so obviously I will not vote for it.

If you guys are THIS aggravated about a JPG pic, I can get suspicions. Ok, one looks slightly darker than the other. SO FREAKING WHAT?!!!! I think Revfan9 was better off putting it into JPG. It safeguards his pic from thieves.

If your worried about people stealing tiles, from THAT format, you might as well not submit a quest. And Animus, I just zoom to the image. I sit about 16 inches away from my monitor, and STILL can tell it is a JPG. But, I've realized that it doesn't matter much, since it's their choice if they want to lose or not. xP

all that means to me is "I think Im so good people will wanna steal my stuff" instead of the mutual respect any real artist should show.

Shouldent someone just make a seperate thread for this jpg. format battle instead of clogging up the SOTW thread with it?

(Just out of curosity why are people concered about stealing... espically when they are planning on releasing those exact same tiles later?)

This week is pretty disappointing, (no offenese contestants but theres nothing realy "new"). Rev. if you want to enter SotW to show off your rips, than by all means proceed, but if you want to win youre going to need to learn how to use those tiles together to make beautiful screens. The graphic in all your shots from this set have looked good, but I have yet to see you really put them together in a sweet way. Using tiles from other sets isent something you should shy away from either. Hell, most of DoR is ripped graphic from multiple games, not to mention Pures set.

.TakaM, I decided to play RnH, and from what I can tell you, Babel(where the tiles are from) is meant to be ancient, dark, and dirty. Besides, the SNES has palette limitations, even though sometimes the artist would not use all the colors, so the colors won't be that astounding. In fact, I like some SNES graphics because they have a consistency of some hue(greyish, reddish, greenish, or the such) as a reflection of that location. However, you don't see that very often anymore; most has been replaced by very bright drawings and palettes, some in which lose an atmosphereic feel, which is sort of sad. For example, the Super Famicom game Tales of Phantasia had a really nice palette, and smooth on the eyes; However, in the GBA port, the palettes were recolored in vibrant colors, losing a part of the atmosperic feel, and the sprites were just...ugh. In fact, the Super Famicom ToP most of the sprites used the same palette, which also had a nice effect in the game.

So, SNES into ZC= Color loss and hue reduction. Reason? ZC can't use 256 colors all at the same time; in fact, you can only have 64 colors per level, and one is meant for sprites...

Even when you JPG'd it, you still had some color loss.. So, I took your PNG, opened it up in Photoshop, and re-jpg'd it. Is there any color loss now? It doesn't quite seem that way.

I'm asking this to you all.. Can we please stop bickering about image formats? It's just so annoying to have to sit through a page and a half of replies, weeding out the un-necessary commentary on JPGs, because if you have the right tools, you can save a pretty nice JPG and not lose any color at all.

On the side note: I voted for Ravfan. icon_wink.gif

even though I cant see any difference until I zoom in over 1000x its till has colour loss and is over ten times the filesize of the png.

face it, jpg fails in every single way

even bmps are better

I gotta' agree with .TakaM.

Also, it's his decision whether he chooses to vote for a screenshot or not, so stop bickering. Everyone has their own aesthetics, so don't complain about his reason for not choosing a certain shot.

icon_clap.gif for Sephiroth

Hopefully people will stop *****ing about the format. Revfan's screen was hardly flawed, and Sephiroth's wasn't flawed at all. Only in the case of bad compression and severe distortion does JPG format kill a screenshot. Granted previous screens have been killed by JPGedness (namely those from DFW), but I didn't even realise Rev's was a JPG, so for that reason I have a problem with it being discriminated against.

My biff is that you don't NEED to zoom in 1000x to judge a screenshot, so WHY DOES THE FORMAT MATTER!!!!! You're a knob head! Blah! I flamed! Suck it!
