That damn coin game. I love it up until it turns into a 50/50 chance. Reasoning out where the points are versus where the volbatorbs are is a lot of fun, but what the hell are you supposed to do when you're not given any tips?

I can get up to Lv.4 on average now before I make either a silly blunder or am just purely unlucky. Highest level has been 6, and the payoff is amazing there. Flamethrower here I come!
I've gotten up to seven, but then accidentally read one of the lines as having five points, no Voltorbs instead of five Voltorbs, no points. icon_doh.gif Then it set me back to two... which seems a bit harsh, I mean I just messed up. icon_frown.gif It's sort of like Sudoku... except not really. For anyone who hasn't played it or can't get a grip on it, the best tip is to narrow down which squares can only be either a 1 or Voltorb, since you don't have to reveal them to advance. Then use the numbers to figure out if any of the other squares must be a 2 or 3. If any line has a number combination of 4/1, 3/2, 2/3, or 1/4 every square in that line is either a Voltorb or a 1.

EDIT: I'm hoping the Rocket Game Corner in Celadon lets you buy coins, because I'm sitting at around 6,000 after hours of that coin flip game; I don't have it in me to go through it multiple times.

I usually never pick a water type as a starter, just because the games are flooded with water pokemon all the time. (Ha. Pun.)

That was my thought process, too. I always go with fire, because there are so few fire Pokemon out there that are good enough for me. Bahaha. There is one exception to this though-- in D/P, I went with Piplup. Why? Because Chimchar would throw fiery poop at me the whole way icon_deformed.gif

But yes, there are TONS of water Pokemon to choose, from, as well as grass. I usually avoid grass, though. Lots of weaknesses there. (Doesn't mean that I don't have at least one Pokemon with a grass attack in its arsenal though.)
QUOTE(Christian @ Mar 17 2010, 03:55 PM) View Post

Meganium has incredible Defense and Special Attack. People mostly choose cyndaquil or totodile because it's the easiest way through the Gyms. Chikorita is my favorite Grass-Type Pokemon IMO.

I wouldn't choose them because they are the easiest. I choose them because, well, a) favoritism, b)cuteness, c)which final evolution is the most badass. In the first gen, I always ALWAYS started with Charmander, which is considered the roughest way through the gyms. So there icon_biggrin.gif

Actually, I'll probably end up throwing the starter into the box. Just to be different.

Say, me too. But that's because Charizard's the most badass Pokémon in the entire series. icon_razz.gif

Actually, I always pick Fire-types for some reason. No special purpose, I just like them the best. icon_shrug.gif

The one exception would be whatever generation Chimchar is in. I think he's one ugly freak. icon_frown.gif

Well, I think Chimchar himself is somewhat cute, but Infernape... now that is one ugly atrocity.

Really? I think Infernape looks cool, like in an "I'm gonna mess you up" kinda way. He's one of the only starter final forms who looks like he can achieve full range of motion with his limbs. icon_razz.gif

I ran some calculations and if I use Dusk Balls at night and put Ho-oh to sleep, the chance of catching him with any ball is around 9% assuming I get it to about 1/10 health... so I'll wait until tonight and trade over my Gengar from Diamond to try it. Normally I just beat the Elite 4 before dealing with the legendaries, but the game forces you to at least fight your version mascot before then.

Just in case you were wondering, using Ultra Balls only gives you a 5% chance at 1 health assuming a fair estimate of Ho-oh's max HP at 180.

Here's my strategy for catching legendaries.

Get them to low health.
Throw dusk balls like made.

No fancy calculations. Just lots of patience. Of course, thanks to Kurt, I may use Heavy Balls instead of Dusk Balls.

Edit: Oh, EZ, you can kill Ho-oh, then come back after you beat the Elite Four and he'll be waiting for a rematch. Any time you accidentally kill a legendary, it will reappear after you beat the Elite Four.

Are you talking about the Extremespeed Dratini you get from the quiz the monk guys give you? Good luck, 'cause they got rid of that for some reason. icon_shrug.gif Unless I did something wrong...

On another note, I'm at about 1,600 or so SRs for Lugia. I hope I get one soon...I wanna continue with the game. icon_neutral.gif

Is that any time in this particular game? Because I don't remember that ever happening in any of the others.

I only have a few main Pokemon. All the others are just for HMs or switched out for type advantages against people (Though, since they're under level, they're not that useful...)

My main Pokemon are:
Feraligatr, Level 41
Noctowl, Level 37
Ampharos, Level 33

Yeah...My team pretty much sucks right now. icon_deformed.gif

Yep, they took the Dratini out since completing the quiz is mandatory for game completion. Also... good luck with that Lugia. I definitely don't have that kind of patience. icon_razz.gif

Fainted Ho-oh as soon as Russ pointed that out; the Kimono Girl also tells you after doing it that you can see Ho-oh again once everything has been finished... which I assume means beating the Elite 4. So yeah, on to those suckers!
News team! ASSEMBLE!
Buzzsaw, the Lv. 40 Meganium!
Batman, the Lv. 37 Crobat!
Boomtown, the Lv. 38 Houndoom!
Backspin, the Lv. 39 Starmie!
BrklnRAGE!, the Lv. 39 Heracross!
and Slave3, the Lv. 30 Red Gyarados!
I'm a little worried that Boomtown just can't pack the "oomf" needed to beat Will's team. He doesn't have any Special moves, which are what I really need. I'm considering teaching it Dark Pulse via TM... I don't think I need it for anything later, and I can always breed it off. icon_unsettled.gif Choices, choices.

I'm also considering training a Gliscor for my sixth slot. With nothing to combat Poison-types, a strong ground doesn't sound bad at all.

So far, Chuck is pretty challenging this time around. I beat his Poliwrath with my Politoed! icon_biggrin.gif It's challenging because his Poliwrath kept using Hypnosis. Good thing my Politoed had Hypnosis as well. I beat him at his own game. Jasmine's the easiest out of all the gym leaders I faced. I was able to OHKO her 2 Magnamites with Heracross's Brick Break and I OHKO her Steelix with Politoed's Surf.

They took him out? Are you sure? I swear I've heard about him being in. Somebody on GameFAQs even posted all the right answers to get him. I could have sworn he's in there. icon_shrug.gif

1,600? I'd be bored by 3. Good luck.
